Macaulay Culkin recently opened up about his difficult relationship with his father, Kit Culkin, adding that it was the late actor John Candy who had first noticed his father's problematic behavior. According to People Magazine, Culkin, who appeared in the documentary John Candy: I Like Me, based on the late comedian's life, revealed how Candy had a "paternal" instinct about Culkin's father.

Macaulay Culkin and his brother, Kieran Culkin, have often discussed their strained relationship with their estranged father, Kit Culkin. In his appearance on the Sibling Revelry Podcast hosted by Kate Hudson and her brother, Oliver Hudson, earlier this year in April, the "Home Alone" actor revealed that he had not spoken to his father, who was once an actor himself, in over three decades. He said:

"I haven't spoken to him in, what would it be, about 30-something years? He has seven kids, and now he has four grandkids, and none of them want anything to do with him."

More about Macaulay Culkin's relationship with his father, as the actor reveals how John Candy was the first person to warn him

Macaulay Culkin was just nine years old when he starred in the popular 1989 movie Uncle Buck alongside John Candy. According to People Magazine, Candy passed away a few years later in 1994 at the age of forty-three after suffering a heart attack.

In the documentary, John Candy: I Like Me, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Thursday, September 4, Macaulay Culkin spoke about Candy's instinct regarding his father. He said:

"I think he always had that really great instinct. I think he saw. Listen, even before the wave crested and the Home Alone stuff was happening, it was not hard to see how difficult my father was. It was no secret. He was already a monster."

He further added:

"All of a sudden, the fame and the money came, and he became an infamous monster. He was already not a good guy. I think John was looking a little side-eyed, like, 'Is everything alright over there? You doing good? Good day? Everything's alright? Everything good at home? Alright.'"

In his appearance on the Sibling Revelry Podcast, Macaulay Culkin, who now shares three children with actress Brenda Song, further added :

"I would know, as a man myself, I would know that I f----- up. I must have done something wrong. I have more than an inkling that he does not feel that way. Like [to him,] we're wrong, and he's right. He's one of those narcissistic crazy people. Me and him were always butting heads. Like I said, he was a bad man."

Macaulay Culkin also added that the way John Candy looked out for him was "a testament to the kind of man he was." He reiterated:

"It doesn't happen that often. It actually happened less as time went on. wish I got more of that in my life. It's important that I remember that. I remember John caring when not a lot of people did."

Macaulay Culkin's father, Christopher"Kit" Culkin, and his mother, Patricia Brentrup, were together for nearly two decades, during which they welcomed several children. When the Culkin siblings began their careers, both parents became their managers, but they later separated in the 1990s, with both of them fighting for control over managing their then minor children's immensely successful Hollywood careers.
