Melanie Newman, a baseball reporter, was hit by a foul ball while she was sitting at the third baseline during a game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Red Sox on Saturday, May 24. Based on the latest reports by US Weekly and The US Sun, Newman, who missed the rest of the game on Saturday due to the accident, returned Sunday for the series finale.

Melanie Newman, 34, a former beauty queen, covers the Baltimore Orioles for MASN, aka Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. She began her career while she was a broadcasting journalism student at Troy University. According to her LinkedIn profile, Melanie has more than a decade of experience in broadcasting, hosting, and commentary.

According to reports, Newman was hit on the temple by the foul ball. The foul ball was hit off the bat by Red Sox outfielder Rob Refsnyder. After she was hit, Newman was immediately taken to a hospital via ambulance, and as per The Sun report, she is fine and showed up for reporting the very next day.

Melanie Newman shared updates on the incident

The US Sun further reports that on Sunday, May 25, Newman, who returned for the series finale, reflected on the incident and shared with reporters Ben Wagner and Ben McDonald that,

" It’s been kind of crazy. You know, I have deflected them before off of places that you don’t really think about twice. "

She further shared that she is keeping the headset away from the place she got hit due to tenderness in the area and added that,

"But look, this is why we have netting for fans. There is not a lot of area for me to move down here. I saw it coming, I was paying attention, I could show you the path of the ground ball."

Newman also added that she felt a bit more competent after doctors watched the video and told her that she "took the route" they would have preferred her to avoid maximum damage.

According to US Weekly, Melanie also updated her X (formerly Twitter) handle about the foul ball incident, where she thanked the staff and the members who actively helped her, as well as her husband, who was in the ambulance with her.

The publication further reports that on Sunday, Newman also took to social media to show the bottle of wine with a handwritten apology card she got from the Red Sox outfielder Rob Refsnyder, who hit the ball that hit her.
