Model and entrepreneur Chrissy Teigen is opening up about her son, Miles Stephens’ Type 1 diabetes journey. On April 15, Screen for Type 1 released a video that sees Teigen sharing details of Miles’ life with Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disorder.
Miles Theodore Stephens was born to Chrissy Teigen and the singer-songwriter John Stephens, more famously known as John Legend, in 2018. Teigen had announced her son’s birth at the time on her social media pages. Teigen posted a precious photograph with the little one and wrote,
“Hello, world! This is Miles Theodore Stephens - We are drowning in his little peeps and nuzzles. Our household feels overwhelmed with love. Thank you for all your well wishes!”

Miles is the celebrity couple’s second son. As per Parade, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen also share a 9-year-old Luna, a 2-year-old Esti, and a 1-year-old son, Wren.
At the time of Miles’ birth, John Legend opened up to Glamour Magazine about the inspiration behind his son’s name. He said,
"every name we give to our kids will have a little bit of musical history to it. Miles is, of course, the same name as the great Miles Davis…Chrissy really liked the name Theodore, so we put it all together and had Miles Theodore Stephens. When he came out and we hung out with him for a little while, we were like, ‘He looks like a Miles.’”
Miles Stephens seems to be interested in football. As per an Instagram post by Legend, the father-son duo attended Miles’ first NFL game in 2022 and supported the Los Angeles Rams.
According to People Magazine, Miles seems to be following in his father’s footsteps. The news outlet reported that Miles sat alongside his dad at the piano, while the latter crooned I Can See Clearly Now while filming a commercial for Vrbo. People Magazine also noted that Legend had posted a TikTok of the pair twinning to his own cover of Twinnem.

Chrissy Teigen on Miles’ Type 1 diabetes journey
In August 2024, Chrissy Teigen took to her Instagram to inform her fans about Miles’ Type 1 diabetes diagnosis. She was addressing fans’ concerns after she had posted an image of herself with her oldest children cheering on the USA during the Paris Olympics. Miles was seen with a glucose monitor on his arm in the photograph.
While addressing her fans and well-wishers, Teigen wrote,
“You noticed his type-1 diabetes monitor and extended so much love and encouragement in every way possible. I was, and am, so blown away by the kindness of this community, already.”
Teigen also revealed the scary circumstances of Miles’ diagnosis. She shared,
“A couple weeks ago, our Miles was sick, in the hospital, with a terrible case of shigella, an intestinal infection caused by bacteria in food or water. A lot of his friends were also sick with it, as they all went to the same camp and well, it happens! But the doctors knew something else was off about his blood tests.”
Teigen added,
“After more testing, we learned he is in the ‘honeymoon period’ of a lifetime of T1. Last night we gave him his first shot of insulin and here we go!”
People Magazine reported that Chrissy Teigen spoke about her son’s emotional reaction and trying to process information about the disease. As per the news outlet, Teigen, remembering Miles’ reaction, said,
“'Why me? How come not Luna?’ He was really worried that it would affect if he could play sports. ‘Can I have candy still? Can I have ice cream?’ All those things that only a kid would worry about.”
Teigen reflected on the experience of getting to terms with her son’s diagnosis in the video released on Screen for Type 1’s YouTube channel. While Miles can be seen playing happily in the background, Teigen reminisces about the fear and uncertainty she went through while finding out about Miles’ disease.
She said,
“One minute he’s living it up at camp and the next we’re in the hospital trying to wrap our heads around this whole thing. It was overwhelming and we were totally behind, googling like maniacs, asking millions of questions trying to learn everything as fast as humanly possible. I felt like I went from a mom to a doctor overnight…Finding out miles will live with type 1 for the rest of his life, it was hard, like gut punch hard.”
Chrissy Teigen and her son, Miles, both used the platform to raise awareness about the chronic disease, urging people to get themselves tested as soon as possible and avoid the chaos that follows a sudden diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes.
