What did Monica Barbaro say about taking some time off social media?

In February 2025, Monica Barbaro was interviewed by Variety, where she shared her thoughts and feelings about the Oscar nomination. She admitted that she never imagined it could happen.

Although she appreciated the support from the producers, Jim, and Searchlight, she said that, like many actors, she struggled with self-doubt and initially questioned whether their encouragement was genuine. She mentioned that she had to take a break from social media, saying:

“I had to delete social media because there’d be a photo of Timmy and then this onslaught of people saying, “He’s going to win an Oscar for this!” And I had to tune it all out because we hadn’t even shot the film yet. My job was to do the work at the utmost level, so I deserved to have my name next to Timmy’s and Elle and Edward.”

Monica Barbaro went on:

“I wanted to earn the seat I had to be able to volley with James Mangold. Also, Joan’s shoes to fill were so immense. So, I think I was far more concerned with messing that up and not doing her justice. And so the response, I honestly just feel like I’ve won the lottery.”

She shared that she had removed social media from her phone. During filming, there was a lot of attention around Timothée and the movie, with people sneaking onto the set or recording from the street.

Later, after receiving an outpouring of positive responses, she deleted social media again because it became overwhelming. Monica Barbaro planned to return eventually but wanted to first reply to the thoughtful messages she had received through emails and texts.
