Monica Seles, who is married to philanthropist Tom Golisano, has now revealed that she is suffering from Myasthenia Gravis, a rare form of autoimmune disease that affects the muscles.

In a recent interview with AP News, the former World No. One revealed the shocking news, adding that she received the diagnosis three years ago, in 2022. In her interview, Seles also mentioned how the slowly developing symptoms of the condition have started to affect her. She said:

"I would be playing [tennis] with some kids or family members, and I would miss a ball. I was like, 'Yeah, I see two balls.' These are obviously symptoms that you can't ignore. It took me quite some time to really absorb it, speak openly about it, because it's a difficult one. It affects my day-to-day life quite a lot."

According to the Cleveland Clinic, the condition affects the skeletal muscles of a person's body, leading to difficulty in blinking one's eyes, chewing food, talking, and even engaging in physical activity. It is a chronic condition that currently has no definite cure. The symptoms, however, can be managed with proper diagnosis and care.

Monica Seles rose to fame in the 1990s, winning her first Grand Slam Title at the French Open in 1990. Later, she went on to win eight other major titles throughout her career, and spent 178 weeks at the World No. One spot. Monica Seles was born on December 2, 1973, in Novi Sad, Serbia, which was then part of Yugoslavia.

Her father, Karolj Seles, introduced her to the sport and trained her and her brother, Zoltan, in their early years. Her father passed away in 1988 at the age of 64 from cancer, just a year before Monica Seles made her professional tennis debut in 1989 at the age of fifteen.

On the other hand, Seles has shown appreciation for her mother, Esther Seles, for inspiring her in her own way. During her speech at her induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, she admired her mother's mental strength, saying that it was something she had inherited from her. She said:

"I would like to thank my mom. Everyone used to say where I got my mental toughness from. Well she's the answer. Thank you."

According to reports, Monica Seles started dating Tom Golisano in 2009. The couple, who have a 32-year age difference, dated for five years before announcing their engagement in 2014. As per the Sydney Morning Herald, Tom Golisano had previously been married three times.

Monica Seles has no biological children, but is the stepmother to Golisano's two children from his previous marriages. The couple has continued to lead a quiet, private life away from the spotlight. Her husband, Tom Golisano, is the founder of Paychex, a company he started in 1971.

According to Forbes, Tom has an estimated net worth of $6.3 billion. As per the Democrat & Chronicle, he stepped away from his role on the company's Board of Directors earlier this year in May. Talking about the move, Golisano said:
