Peter was born on August 15, 1967, in New York City.

In 1997, he made his acting debut on Guiding Light. He portrayed the role of Dr. Michael Burke on this CBS soap opera. While he appeared in different projects in the next few years, his breakthrough performance came in 2002 for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
