The couple was together for over 60 years

In 1964, Phil Robertson and Marsha Kay Carroway Robertson, affectionately called Miss Kay, started dating during their high school years. Two years later, the high school sweethearts got married in 1966. She was just 19 when she exchanged her vows with her partner.

As EntertainmentNow reported, Kay was studying in the ninth grade and Phil was her senior, in tenth, when they came across each other. During her sophomore year, she was recognized as the "Class Beauty" at North Caddo High School in Vivian, Louisiana, Huffington Post reported. In 1962, she received the "Class Personality" title in her freshman year.

According to TVRuckus, Phil and Kay wed legally much later, with the legal formalization of their wedding taking place on April 11, 1968.

In a June 2014 conversation with Us Weekly, Kay revealed the news, sharing,

"Well, this is the first time I’ve shared this, aside from giving my testimony [in church]. When I made a vow to God and to [Phil], it was March 22, 1964."

She further accepted,

"It wasn’t legal. That’s the truth. We didn’t do the legal papers until April 11, 1968, after Alan, my oldest, was born."

Phil Robertson and Kay Robertson got separated

Often, they have openly discussed the hardships they faced in their marriage, particularly during the early years, and their periods of separation. Reportedly, the reality television star struggled with alcohol abuse and infidelity.

However, Kay chose to fight for her marriage and stayed, as per Fox News. Phil's religious awakening was a significant reason behind their relationship's turning point. Soon, they started working on their marriage and reconciled to restore their family.

He conveyed:

"So basically, it was from a woman who said that by a DNA search, she thinks that dad might be her dad."

Alan told his parents the startling news after he realized the Christian woman wasn't requesting money.

He narrated the incident, explaining,

"Once we get into that and start looking at it a little more deeply, I’m like, 'Oh woah, woah … there might be something to this.'"

Even a DNA test was conducted. It showed a 99.99% match between Phil and Phyllis.

Phil Robertson's family cherished his memory

After the patriarch's death, his son Willie Jess Robertson and daughter-in-law Korie Robertson spoke highly of him in a joint statement.

It reads,

"We celebrate today that our father, husband, and grandfather, Phil Robertson, is now with the Lord. He reminded us often of the words of Paul, 'you do not grieve like those who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.'"

The couple thanked everyone

"for the love and prayers of so many whose lives have been impacted by his life saved by grace, his bold faith, and by his desire to tell everyone who would listen the Good News of Jesus."

They shared their admiration for the Duck Dynasty patriarch, expressing,

"We are grateful for his life on earth and will continue the legacy of love for God and love for others until we see him again."

Phil's granddaughter, Sadie Robertson Huff, reflected on her Papaw's life in a heartfelt Instagram post.

Sharing glimpses of memorable moments with the family, she wrote,

"As I was sitting with Papaw Phil today, I thought about this verse… he has already experienced this on earth—going from dead to alive by the power of Christ!"

Recalling one of the last things he said, Sadie further wrote,

"It was his testimony that changed his life, our families life, and thousands of others. Now he is experiencing it in the fullness. Fully alive in Christ. The new has come."

Sadie's husband, Christian Huff, opened up about spending a couple of years with Phil Robertson.
