Brazilian singer and actress Preta Gil has died. She was 50.

Born Preta Maria Gadelha Gil Moreira, she succumbed to a two-year battle with colorectal cancer, having been diagnosed in January 2023, according to Euro News, reports Yahoo. She reportedly underwent several surgeries, to no avail.

She was the daughter of Gilberto Gil and Sandra Gadelha. Her father is a fellow musician and, according to a 2023 Reuters report, was Brazil's Minister of Culture from 2003 to 2008. Her mother, Sandra, is an actress who worked in O Nome Dela é Gal (2017) and Corações a Mil (1981), according to her IMDb bio.

Preta Gil was last seen onstage alongside her father during the Tempo Rei tour, in São Paulo in April this year. The pair performed Drão, which was inspired by Sandra and the tumultuous time Gilberto had during his separation from her.

"Drão, our love is like a grain/ A seed of illusion/ You have to die to germinate/ Plant somewhere/ Resurrect our sowing on the ground/ Who can make that love die/ Our walk," a line from the song reads.

As of this writing, Preta's parents have yet to issue a statement.


Preta Gil's life and legacy explored

Preta Gil was an outspoken member of the LGBTQ+ community on Instagram, where she also opened up to her 12 million followers about her battle with cancer. Just last year, she shifted to New York, US, in search of alternative treatment, which is also where she passed away.

She had been married twice. In 1994, she tied the knot with actor Otavio Muller. They welcomed a son, Francisco, but filed for divorce in 1995. In 2015, Preta Gil married Rodrigo Godoy, per Prime Timer. However, by 2023 they filed for divorce. That same year, Preta Gil was diagnosed with cancer.

She released her first studio album, Prêt-à Porter, in 2003. She posed nude for the cover images and booklet of the CDs, and reportedly, her goal was to experience being reborn. Two years later, she launched her new tour, Noite Preta. She went on to release three more albums: Preta, Sou Como Sou, and Todas as Cores.

Preta was also an actress, and, per Prime Timer, she starred in soap operas like Pé na Cova and Cheias de Charme, as well as the telenovela Caminhos do Coraçã, and the television series Ó Pai Ó and Os Mutantes.


Preta Gil leaves behind son Francisco, granddaughter Sol de Mariaher, her parents, and her seven siblings.
