Roddy Ricch, the Grammy-winning rapper, was comedy legend Will Ferrell’s first concert. He revealed this during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on April 29. The crowd was caught off guard by the revelation, which added another twist to Ferrell’s already wild conversation.
During his visit to Colbert’s program, the Anchorman star participated in the renowned “Colbert Questionert,” a segment in which guests are asked 15 quick-fire, philosophically flavored (and sometimes absurd) questions meant to delve into the full scope of human experience. Ferrell, of course, went above and beyond with his strange, sardonic comments about deadly penguins, salami and grapefruit sandwiches, and even dead people becoming trees.
After declaring penguins to be the most terrifying animals on the planet, Ferrell said:
“You know the old phrase — don’t turn your back on a penguin. Just think about The Penguin in Batman. Oswald Cobblepot learned everything from real penguins.”
However, Ferrell’s response to a seemingly simple question —
"What was the first concert you ever attended?"
— stole the show. Ferrell responded without skipping a beat, saying:
"Roddy Ricch,"
Colbert asked twice:
"Who is Roddy Ricch?"
To which Ferrell replied:
"Just a Hip-Hop guy"
adding that the concert happened:
"About five years ago in my first concert"
When asked if he could name any of Roddy’s songs, Ferrell admitted, "no."
More about Roddy Ricch and the story about him losing his Grammy award:
One of the most influential voices in contemporary hip-hop is Grammy-winning rapper Roddy Ricch, best known for songs like The Box and Rockstar. Fans of melodic rap and trap music have come to recognize Ricch (real name Rodrick Wayne Moore Jr.), who rose to prominence in the late 2010s. His 2019 album Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial went multi-platinum and won him the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance. His distinctive style blends catchy hooks with raw street narratives.
Roddy Ricch's Grammy was discovered in an unoccupied storage unit
In a strange turn of events, YouTuber Prieto Hunters discovered and bought Roddy Ricch’s 2020 Grammy for Racks in the Middle — his feature on Nipsey Hussle’s track with Hit-Boy — for just $280 in an abandoned storage unit.
The rapper and the social media star got into a public spat after the viral discovery was shared on TikTok on November 30, 2024.
Through an Instagram Live on December 2, 2024, Ricch explained how the award ended up in storage. According to him, it was due to logistical chaos after his personal assistant was involved in a near-fatal accident — all while Ricch was frequently traveling to Miami.
Ricch explained:
“My personal assistant ended up getting into a near-fatal accident and had a severe brain injury. Me going back and forth to Miami, I just put my stuff in storage for safe-keeping. Him getting into that accident is how that sh*t got mishandled.”
Ricch also accused Hunter of attempting to extort him by demanding $50,000 and a luxury watch:
“First he asked me for an [Audemars Piguet]. Then he asked me for $50,000. So, it was never about ‘Oh, we’re going to do it on just the strength of trying to get it back to you.’ It was more so about a n***** trying to get clout off it or a n***** trying to extort me for $50,000.”
Hunter denied all of Ricch’s claims. In a TikTok video posted the same day, he said all he wanted was to return the award and create content about it.
He said:
“Clearly, that wasn’t possible. Guys, this has turned into a nightmare for me. Threats to me and my family, pictures of my house. All of my family is getting affected by this. This is what I do for a living: I post videos of what I find in storage units. All I made was a video of me finding this, and that’s it. Never was it meant to disrespect or anybody.”
He later commented on Instagram:
“I did not ask for that and no I did not get offered none 50k all I got was threats you guys don’t know the full story I returned it at NO COST and want nothing to do with them I want no compensation from them not even tickets!”
Eventually, a price was agreed upon, and the exchange took place at a California police station where Roddy Ricch’s assistant retrieved the award.
Will Ferrell is known for his erratic interviews and irreverent humor. He can often be seen in-character as Ron Burgundy. Another fan-favorite appearance was the chaotic ‘Knife Guys’ segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he appeared alongside Ryan Reynolds. It’s a bit hard to believe that Roddy Ricch was Ferrell’s first-ever concert — but then again, he is Will Ferrell.
