Roger Ewing was an American film actor, best known for portraying Deputy Marshal Thad Greenwood on Gunsmoke. Ewing, as per his family's obituary, passed away on December 18, 2025, at the age of 83. The family did not reveal a cause of death.

Ewing first appeared on Gunsmoke as Ben Lukens in a February 1965 episode, and then later as That Greenwood in Season 11. At the time, a contract dispute between James Arness and CBS led to the network's halt of Ewing's character. After the dispute was resolved in 1967, Ewing's character was written out of the show.

More about Roger Ewing

Roger Ewing was born in Los Angeles in January 1942. He began acting when he was a senior in high school and played Chester in a variety show satire of Gunsmoke. In a 1966 interview, Ewing said,

"I watched (the show) every Saturday night."

After studying a year in college, Ewing worked as a lifeguard and made his onscreen debut in an uncredited role in the 1964 film Ensign Pulver. He then went on to appear on episodes of Bewitched, The Baileys of Balboa, The Ring Crosby Show, and Rawhide. He was also cast in the Frank Sinatra film, None But the Brave.

When Burt Reynolds left Gunsmoke, the producers of the show were searching for a younger actor to replace Reynolds' character and hired Ewing as Clayton Thaddeus Greenwood. Ewing entered the cast when Arness and CBS were having a dispute over salary and ownership of the show, and the producers considered Ewing as a replacement. However, since Arness and the producers worked it out, Ewing's character was written out of the show.

While talking about his role, Roger Ewing once said,

"With Thad's family gone, Matt, Kitty, Doc, and Festus sort of adopted him. Anything that needed to be done, you know, an extra hand here, and extra hand there. Thad was always around. He fit in whenever necessary."

After his stint on Gunsmoke, Ewing appeared on episodes of The Mothers-in-Law and Death Valley Days. He also appeared in several films, including Play it as it Lays, and Smith.

Ewing eventually quit acting and pursued philosophy. He went on to travel through Europe, Russia, Mexico, and the South Pacific. Ewing was active in local politics and ran for a city council seat in Morro Bay, California, in 2003.

There's very little information on Roger Ewing's personal life, and no information on the surviving members of his family.
