Who is Rosalind Ross? Inside the filmmaker’s career following her breakup with Mel Gibson

Rosalind Ross and Mel Gibson have quietly separated after dating for nine years. The pair issued a joint statement on Tuesday, Dec. 30, and expressed their commitment to co-parent their 8-year-old son, Lars. They told People:

"Although it's sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible."

According to the outlet, the couple split about a year ago.

Rosalind Ross is a writer and director

Rosalind Ross, or Rose, is a California-born writer credited for penning an episode of the series Matador. Her speculative screenplay, Barbarian, made it to the Black List in 2016, and it has been dubbed as the "female Braveheart."

In 2022, Ross took directing and executive producing roles for the movie Father Stu, based on the life of boxer-turned-priest Stuart Long. The movie starred Mel Gibson and Mark Wahlberg. Rotten Tomatoes also rated the project 95%.

In an interview, Rose revealed that the acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino is one of her influences. She also clarified that, while she credited Mel Gibson as one of her career inspirations, Rose expressed her desire to find her own identity as a writer and director.

"He has been my mentor and a huge inspiration of mine … Undoubtedly, he's been a huge influence. But I really want to create my own identity as a filmmaker, and I think I have a very distinctive, different identity from now [on after Father Stu]."

Apart from writing and directing, Rosalind Ross also dabbled in the acting arena. She appeared in the short film called A Social Life in 2016 but has remained inactive since.

She was an equestrian gold medalist

Ross was a world champion in equestrian vaulting. She earned a gold medal at the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

In 2011, she did a photo shoot for ESPN's Body Issue to represent her sport.

Ross and Mel Gibson first met in 2014 when she was 23 and he was 58 through mutual friends. They dated not long after, and in 2016, they announced that they were expecting a child. A source told People at the time:

"Mel and Rose are so excited about the baby. Mel loves being a dad and he and Rose can't wait to be parents together. The last two years have been some of his happiest years he's ever had."

In January 2017, the pair finally welcomed their son, Lars Gerard Gibson. Another insider told the magazine then:

"They're thrilled and Lars is adorable. Their family is all around them and Mel is over the moon. They're home and everybody is healthy and happy!"
