Actress and singer Shaina Taub has decided to take a break from her Broadway show Ragtime. Taub, who is married to actor and producer Matt Gehring, shared an Instagram post on November 20 reflecting on the reason behind the decision. She wrote:

“Playing Emma Goldman in Ragtime is a childhood dream come true. I'm taking a leave from the show from Jan 6 thru March 29, and I want to share why. This is a vulnerable topic often kept in the shadows, but I'm posting in the hopes that someone reading feels less alone.”

Shaina Taub’s post further reads:

“My husband Matt and I have been trying for a baby. In the past year, I've been pregnant three times. But each time ended in loss. A first trimester miscarriage during Suffs last December. A second trimester TFMR, which stands for termination for medical reasons (please look it up) in May. And another miscarriage the week Ragtime opened.”

Shaina Taub said that it has been a difficult journey for her. She mentioned that her body needed a break following so many hospital visits. In her post, she thanked the Lincoln Center Theater for giving her the support she wanted. Shaub said that even though she had to perform during a difficult time, it healed her in certain ways. She also said:

“I'll be glad to return for the rest of the run. This remarkably kind cast and crew have been a real lifeline.”

Shaina Taub talks about raising awareness and fundraising

In the next slide in her carousel post, Shaina Taub clarified that the reason for sharing her personal journey was not to gain sympathy. She explained that out of four pregnancies, one ended in a loss. This made her feel how a common phenomenon ends up becoming an isolated one. Since listening to others who went through similar experiences gave her comfort, she wanted to tell her story for others to feel the same. The other reason for sharing her narrative was:

“I want to raise awareness and funds for reproductive healthcare, which I now see in a stark new light.”

Speaking about her miscarriage journey, Shaina Taub said that she went through the natural process a day before Ragtime was scheduled. However, after that, her health began to deteriorate. She had contractions, bled, and even lost consciousness. She wrote:

“Matt called 911 and I was rushed to the ER. My doctor said the only way to prevent another dangerous hemorrhage was an immediate, life-saving surgical procedure called a D&C. Thank goodness I could get one in time here in New York.”

Shaina Taub explained that she and Matt made a fundraising page to help future patients, not themselves. She said that caring for one person cost a lot of money, and the best way people could support them was by helping other women and families who didn’t have the same resources. She also shared that the donation link was in her bio and stories.
