Radio broadcaster and TV host ‘Super’ Jay Johnson died on August 30 at the age of 78 following a long battle with illness. Johnson worked with Wish TV, which mentioned that he had more than five decades of experience in the broadcasting industry. While he was with the media house, he hosted “Black Focus,” which aired during the 1980s.

The radio broadcaster also worked with WTLC-FM as a Program Director. In an obituary posted on the website, they wrote:

“He was a larger-than-life personality who shaped the sound of our station and left a lasting mark on Indianapolis radio. Known for his booming voice, sharp wit, and deep love of music, Jay brought energy and authenticity to every broadcast.”

Jay Joshnson has worked with several notable names as he began working with WGRT in 1968. He then joined WVON, where he became known as a part of The Good Guys. He was also associated with WBBM-TV. His work with WTLC focused on the Black community.

He was also a member of the Living Legends Foundation and was associated with JJE Voice Works. His son, Troy Johnson, shared a Facebook post, writing:

“I want to share some sad personal news. My father, Jay Johnson, passed away this week. He was a tremendous influence on my life and the biggest supporter thru my career. I’ll be carrying his lessons, wisdom and love with me always.”

Among his accolades, Johnson once received an honor from Billboard. He also won the Black Radion exclusive awards. The radio broadcaster was awarded with Sagamore of the Wabash, which is considered one of the highest civilian honors by Indiana.

Following the news of his death, Johnson’s friends and colleagues paid tribute to him. Karen Vaughn, his colleague from WTLC, shared a heartfelt post on Instagram, sharing that she first met Super Jay Johnson at WTLC’s 50th Anniversary after only talking to him on the phone before.

She mentioned that when they met in person, he not only greeted her but also gave her advice about staying positive and strong while managing programming and being on-air. He encouraged her to keep doing well and to motivate her team, and those words stayed with her. Praising the radio broadcaster, Vaughn wrote:

“Jay was more than “Super.” He was a giant spirit, a brilliant mind, and an unforgettable presence. His legacy lives not only in the music and the unforgettable moments on air, but in the way he made people feel truly seen.”

She went on:

“At WTLC, we love hard for our radio family, and today we honor one of our own. Jay Johnson will forever be missed. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this time.”

Eric Davis wrote that Super Jay Johnson was more than just a radio broadcaster. He was a well-known figure in Indianapolis. He shared that they often had meals together when he worked as the Morning Drive host at Power 105 WTLC. He added that Jay was now free from pain and sent his deepest sympathy to Jay’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
