The French actor and musician Tchéky Karyo died on October 31, 2025, at the age of 72 after a struggle with cancer. He was known for his strong screen presence and versatility in both French and international productions. His family confirmed his death, and the film industry paid tribute to his long and respected career.

He was born on October 4, 1953, in Istanbul, Turkey, where he spent his early years before his family relocated to Paris, France. He attended the Cyrano Theatre, where he studied drama, and subsequently joined the Daniel Sorano Company, where he performed in both classical and modern plays. His early stage experience helped him build a career that lasted more than four decades.

Karyo became one of France’s most recognizable actors, working across film, television, and stage. He played a wide range of characters, earning recognition both in France and internationally. He was also a musician and was fluent in different languages such as Turkish, Greek, French, and English.

Tchéky Karyo started his acting career in French theatre and later moved to film in the early 1980s. He received his first major acknowledgment with the film La Balance in 1982, in which he was nominated for the César Award in the Most Promising Actor category. He was awarded the Jean Gabin Prize in 1986 as a sign of his growing influence in French cinema.

He went on to star in several popular French movies, collaborating with notable film directors and becoming known as a devoted actor in every role. He made a breakthrough to global audiences through his work with filmmaker Luc Besson, featuring in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc and La Femme Nikita.

Tchéky Karyo appeared in Hollywood films such as GoldenEye (1995) and The Patriot (2000) with Mel Gibson. These roles helped him gain international recognition as a skilled character actor in English-language films.

Television further expanded Tchéky Karyo’s popularity. International acclaim came from his performance as French detective Julien Baptiste in the BBC drama The Missing. His acting received praise for its quality and authenticity, which led to several accolades. The popularity resulted in a spin-off, Baptiste (2019–2021), where Karyo was the main character. The character became one of the most recognizable detectives on European television.

Besides acting, Tchéky Karyo was also committed to music. He released two albums, Ce lien qui nous unit in 2006 and Credo in 2013. His songs often reflected his personal thoughts and experiences. Apart from acting, Karyo was involved in music throughout his life.

Over his career, Tchéky Karyo worked across several countries and became a prominent figure in French and international cinema. Audiences and his colleagues respected him because of his devotion to his craft. He had one child with actress Valérie Keruzoré, whom he married.
