Today host Shienelle Jones' husband, Uche Ojeh, has succumbed to brain cancer at the age of 45.
Jones and Ojeh had been married for 17 years, and his battle with the fatal ailment had lasted for months ahead of his demise. Savannah Guthrie announced the news on air on TODAY this Friday, May 23.
Uche Ojeh worked as a managing partner at UAO Consulting from 2008 up until his death. Prior to that, he worked as a consultant at Accenture. He graduated from Northwestern University in 2001 with a degree in Computer Science and Economics Concentration, which is also where he met his future wife, Shienelle Jones.
Today reported that in his spare time, Uche Ojeh sang in his church choir, engaged in triathlons, and played soccer. NBC News has reported that he had long been devoted to his Nigerian heritage and tried to instill in his children the same.
Uche Ojeh's life and legacy explored as tributes come pouring in:
According to NBC News, Shienelle Jones and Uche Ojeh met when the former was just 18. At the time, she offered to show a high school senior around on the campus of her alma mater. They soon began dating and were together for eight years before Ojeh asked her to marry him on the very same campus.
They tied the knot in September 2007 in Philadelphia, Jones's native city, and two years later, they welcomed their firstborn son, Kayin. They soon welcomed twins, son Uche and daughter Clara, in July 2012.
“With profound sadness, we share this morning that Uche Ojeh, the husband of our friend and 'TODAY' co-host Sheinelle Jones, has passed away after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma,” Savannah Guthrie said on air. “There are no words for the pain we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children. Uche was an incredible person. We all loved him. And so we want to take a moment to tell you more about the remarkable man who was Sheinelle’s perfect partner in life.”
Parade has reported that Jones first took a leave of absence from the show in December 2024 and has been missing since then. This January, she revealed that she was tackling a "family health matter," forcing her to take an odd. Just today it was announced that Uche Ojeh had been dealing with glioblastoma.
On their anniversary in September 2023, Jones took to Instagram to gush over her husband:
"It's amazing how life works sometimes … I was born in Philly … moved away as a baby … visited my father every summer after my parents separated … but I never imagined I'd end up having some of the best years of my life and career there, getting married in Philly, and ultimately having 3 kids at the same hospital where I was born," she wrote. "We've created beautiful memories…. here's to a lifetime more."
Craig Melvin also mourned Uche Ojeh's demise on Today, as he said:
“One thing he always talked about — he talked about those kids. He loved those kids more than anything else in this world, and was just so proud. He was that dad that was on the sideline at every soccer game. He was at all the concerts, the recitals. He was that guy, and they had such a beautiful love story.”
According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, glioblastoma, also referred to as a grade IV astrocytoma, "is a fast-growing and aggressive brain tumor. It invades the nearby brain tissue but generally does not spread to distant organs."
Furthermore,
"GBM is a devastating brain cancer that can result in death in six months or less, if untreated; hence, it is imperative to seek expert neuro-oncological and neurosurgical care immediately, as this can impact overall survival."
