For more than two decades, Valerie Alexander has been the quiet anchor in Shaun Alexander’s life. The pair, who married in April 2002, have built a large and deeply faith-rooted family. Valerie, known as Valerie Boyd before marriage, has supported her husband during his playing days and continued to do so after his NFL career ended.
This week, the couple made headlines once again. During an appearance on Up & Adams, Shaun confirmed that Valerie Alexander was pregnant with their 14th child. “We’re just now starting to tell people,” the Seahawks’ all-time leading rusher admitted.
“But No. 14 is in the belly,” he shared.
Their household already included 12 children: Heaven, Trinity, Eden, Joseph, Justus, Temple, Honor, Jedidiah, Eternity, Hosanna, Hope, and Judea. In 2017, the Alexanders lost a daughter, Torah, who died just 70 days after birth, a loss that left a lasting mark on the family.
The former Pro Bowler revealed the news while also discussing the Harvest Covenant, a homeschooling initiative rooted in faith that featured a football team under his guidance.
Shaun Alexander said the first kiss with Valerie Alexander happened at the altar:
Shaun and Valerie Alexander have been together for 23 years, a relationship that began soon after the NFL star arrived in Seattle. In his book Touchdown Alexander, he recalled,
“The first time I kissed her was at the altar after Pastor Treat said, ‘You may now kiss the bride.’ It was worth the wait.”
Valerie Alexander and Shaun, dated for two years before marrying in April 2002, marking the start of their long partnership. They first met when Valerie Alexander showed up at a party on Shaun’s first day in Seattle after the Seahawks drafted him. At the time, Valerie Alexander admitted that she did not know “too much” about football, a fact that did little to stop their connection from growing.
Shaun Alexander shared joy over their 14th baby, joked about Philip Rivers' comparison:
By announcing baby number 14, Shaun Alexander moved into rare NFL territory. The former MVP now matched Antonio Cromartie’s family total and went beyond Philip Rivers, who had 10 children.
“You know what? It’s really wild,” Alexander admitted.
Kay Adams, the host of Up & Adams, teased him, saying:
“I want you to look at this: Philip Rivers, get to work. That’s what I want to say. Philip steals headlines with 10. You only have 10 children. Philip, get a grip. We should take his Hall of Fame away and give it to you.”
Alexander, smiling, replied,
“You know, I want my kids to see the Hall of Fame. Am I asking too much?”
Shaun Alexander reflected on touchdowns, legacy, and life beyond football:

Former Seattle Seahawks star Shaun Alexander reflected on his career and game in an interview highlighted by 12th Man Rising on February 11, 2024. Speaking with FanSided ahead of the Super Bowl, Alexander admitted it was hard to find a running back who played the way he once did.
As a power runner who averaged more than 300 carries a season, Alexander said the modern NFL emphasized versatility, particularly in pass-catching backs, while his workload had been centered almost entirely on running.
“I was running the ball so much that my catches had to be limited,” he explained.
He eventually compared himself to Le’Veon Bell, though he could not immediately recall Bell’s name. Still, he added that while Bell was “great,” he did not quite reach the same level of production. Bell retired with 42 rushing touchdowns compared with Alexander’s 100. In total, Alexander scored 112 touchdowns in Seattle. For him, finding the end zone was more than just points on the scoreboard.
“Scoring TDs was the ultimate moment in football,” he said, recalling how he set his sights on passing Barry Sanders’ total of 99 rushing touchdowns. Alexander hit that milestone exactly, with his 100th coming in 2005 during his MVP season.
“Everybody has different things that drive them, some people it’s the roar of the crowd, some people it’s ‘get my mom a house,’ for me there was just something about scoring touchdowns…it moved me. I wanted to be a person…that the dad put his arm around his son, ‘remember when we saw Alexander make that play?’” Alexander reflected.
From dominating the field to building a 14-child household with Valerie Alexander, Shaun’s story has always been about more than stats. Whether chasing touchdowns, reflecting on his MVP season, or sharing quiet moments with Valerie and their family, Alexander has shown that passion, dedication, and love drive both career and life.
