Spanish actress and filmmaker Verónica Fernández Echegaray, commonly known as Verónica Echegui, died at the age of 42 on August 24, 2025, at 12 de Octubre University Hospital in Madrid.

According to Hola, the Fortitude star, Echegui was suffering from an illness, which led to her unfortunate death. While she battled with her illness at the hospital for several days, during her final moments, Echegui's partner of 15 years, Álex García, and her family members and close friends stood by her side.

Verónica Echegui had spent 15 long years in a romantic relationship with Álex García, who is a Spanish actor widely known for starring in TV series such as Tierra de lobos and Amar en tiempos revueltos. The 43-year-old García has also starred in several movies, like The Wedding Unplanner, Fatum, In Family I Trust, and more. Verónica Echegui met Álex during the production of Roberto Pérez Toledo's comedy-drama film, Six Points About Emma, and the two fell in love, deciding to be together ever since.

While Echegui and García kept their relationship and personal lives away from public attention and the spotlight, there were a few moments when the late Spanish actress expressed her love for Álex. One of those times was at the 2022 Goya Awards gala, when she shared a few words about her partner. As per Hola, Verónica said:

"My love, how glad I am to grow up by your side. I love you."

Besides working on the film Six Points About Emma together, Echegui and García also worked together on the movie No culpes al Karma de lo que te pasa por gilipollas, which was released in 2016.

During a 2017 interview with HELLO!, Verónica Echegui talked about her relationship with Álex and said:

"The secret to our relationship lies in love. A long-term relationship requires work, and we want to work on it."

Born in Madrid, Spain, in June 1983, Verónica Echegui gained significant fame after starring in the British psychological thriller TV series, Fortitude.

In a 2015 interview with The Standard, Echegui talked about her parents and growing up in Madrid. While her father was a lawyer, her mother worked as a civil servant. She also revealed how she decided at the age of eight that she wanted to pursue acting.

Verónica Echegui, before becoming a professional actress, worked at a cafe as a waitress in Camden Passage, Islington. She further disclosed during the interview that she had also worked as a dog-walker, and recalled it being stressful.

Echegui's acting talent was discovered by renowned Spanish filmmaker Bigas Luna, who later cast her in one of his films called My Name Is Juani.
