Christina Applegate is recuperating after being hospitalized.
People Magazine broke the news that the actress, 53, is being treated for a kidney infection that has spread to both kidneys, leaving her with "so much pain" that she's "screaming."
The actress recorded the latest episode of the podcast she co-hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, titled MeSsy, from a hospital in Los Angeles. During the Tuesday, August 5 segment, she detailed the extreme pain that prompted her to think her appendix had burst.
Christina Applegate was flying back from Europe when she took ill. Explaining how she didn't want to get up in the middle of the night to be rushed to the ER, she decided to head straight for the hospital.
“I'm like, I wanna be admitted,” Christina Applegate said. “I'm staying here because I want answers. I want every test that you can possibly think of or ones that you haven't even thought of, and I want them done.”
The following day, she woke up experiencing intense pain on her right side.
“Of course, my brain's like, ‘Oh, my appendix is bursting,'" Christina Applegate recalled. “So much pain. I'm screaming, and they ordered me an emergency CT at 2 in the morning,” she said, noting that the scans indicated she had a kidney infection. “I’m just gonna be here,” she said, referring to her hospitalization, adding, “Because of this kidney infection, I have to have intravenous antibiotics right now. And that's where we're at.”
The actress then slammed her doctor for thinking she had a urinary tract infection and asking her how she wiped:
“Like, what am I back-wiping? Like, seriously, I'm 53,” she said.

Christina Applegate has long been vocal about her struggles with multiple sclerosis. As reported by Page Six in March this year, during the one-year anniversary of her podcast, she opened up about dealing with the autoimmune disease in response to a listener who said that she was “throwing up and having diarrhea every single day.”
“This is really important because for three years, since I was diagnosed, I’ve been in the hospital upwards of 30 times from throwing up and diarrhea and pain that is unimaginable,” Applegate said at the time. “They’ve done every test known to man on me, put so much radiation into my body from CT scans to everything else,” she continued.
She also said that she'd discovered the cause of her symptoms around that time:
“Now, maybe this isn’t what’s happening, but I’m just gonna tell you this: Talk to your doctor about motility issues, OK? Because one of the things with MS is that it slows down our organs — not completely, but there is a slowing of the function of your organs,” the actress said.
The Dead To Me actress and Primetime Emmy Award nominee was diagnosed with the condition in 2021. In her segment, she joked about a particular symptom of MS:
“Have you puked, and had diarrhea at the same time,” she said. “Because that’s my favorite part, that’s the sexiest.” She then suggested keeping a trash can next to the toilet, “because you can do both without it being messy, I had one yesterday,” she added.
