Singer and songwriter Faith Evans, who was married to the late rapper, The Notorious B.I.G., seems to be in a legal trouble. A lawsuit has been filed against her by record executive Wayne Barrow for allegedly withholding profits from a catalog deal.
The lawsuit claims that a percentage of the profits was supposed to go to The Notorious B.I.G.’s mother, Voletta Wallace, but that never happened. Meanwhile, through the lawsuit, Barrow wants regain the deserved amount which will ultimately go towards charity work.
Voletta Wallace died on February 21, 2025. The cause of her death was natural. After that, Faith Evans took charge as the manager of her late husband’s company.
Barrow, the trustee of Wallace’s estate, filed the lawsuit in Delaware on July 2. According to Billboard, Wallace looked after her son’s assets. Before her death, she arranged a sale of a portion of her son’s catalog to music company, Primary Wave.
A portion of the profits from the deal, valued at $100 million, was supposed to be handed over to Voletta Wallace’s trust, which was taken care of by Barrow. He claimed that although Wallace’s trust was a 50% member in The Notorious B.I.G.’s company, they weren’t informed about anything related to the company’s business affairs. A section of the court filing reads:
“Ms. Evans has distributed sale proceeds to Ty’anna, CJ, and presumably to herself. She, however, has wrongfully withheld the Trust’ share of the proceeds.”
It goes on:
“Ms. Evans’s actions are particularly troubling given that, unlike Mr. Barrow, she has never previously been involved in the LLC’s management.”
Besides that, Barrow wants Faith Evans to be taken off her position in the company as she failed to perform her duties well.
Faith Evans on growing up and performing in choirs
In April 2025, Faith Evans appeared on the On That Note podcast with Shawn Stockman. Looking back in time, she reflected on her upbringing, saying she was raised by her grandparents.
The only music she was surrounded with was gospel. Evans mentioned that her mother led a Florida-based band. When she went to her mother’s house, she would rummage through her catalogs and listen to different artists. She said:
“My mom, you know, she performed all types of music although I wasn't there for most of that and to really witness that because most of this was before I was born. But yeah her musical palette was a lot more, had a lot more variety.”
Faith Evans went on:
“So, all of that really informed me to be honest. But singing in church obviously was the first thing to shape me being in the choir and right, you know, having to learn harmonies.”
Faith Evans shared that she performed in some gospel musicals and was part of a quartet group for a few years. She sang at different events like school programs, weddings, funerals, and retirement parties.
She even won a few pageants, although she didn’t really see herself as a pageant person. She also mentioned that the only jobs she ever had were short-lived grocery store jobs during high school, where she got fired from both for giving groceries to her cousins.
