Why did Kate Gosselin divorce Jon Gosselin? Reality star opens up about split 

Former television personality Kate Gosselin has recently opened up about her divorce from Jon Gosselin. During a TikTok live session on August 27, 2025, Kate Gosselin provided her advice on a viewer's question regarding how one should get through and deal with a divorce. The 50-year-old reality TV star, Kate, who married Jon Gosselin in 1999, filed for divorce from him in 2009.

Kate Gosselin and her 48-year-old ex-husband, Jon, both rose to fame after starring in the TLC TV reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8, which was released in 2007. The show ran for five seasons, and after Kate's split from Jon, it continued under the title Kate Plus 8. Kate and Jon share sextuplets, Leah, Alexis, Collin, Hannah, Joel, and Aaden, who are 21, and twins, Cara and Mady, who are 24.

However, as per People, Kate divorced Jon for reasons related to his infidelity. At the time, there were reports of Jon cheating on Kate, which became the primary reason for their split.

During her TikTok live stream, Kate Gosselin answered a viewer's question about how one should get through a divorce. She said:

"I don't know if you have kids or don't have kids, but I just, I made decisions based on how I would want to be treated, honestly. And I didn't buy into all the drama and the hate, and the ugly. And I had kids involved, so I wanted it to be as peaceful for them as I possibly could."

Kate Gosselin continued and said:

"I did not hire an attorney that wanted to stir up trouble; I just wanted it to be peaceful, and I wanted the best for my kids. A lot of things happened that I could not control that did not turn out well for my kids, but I did my best. We just got through it to the best of our ability."

She further added:

"It could've been a lot calmer and a lot nicer if everybody was willing to play nice."

Following their divorce, Kate and Jon had faced their fair share of ups and downs with one another as well as with their children. Jon, in a 2023 interview with The US Sun, revealed that it had been a long time, almost a decade, since he got in touch with Mady and Cara, who are his oldest kids. Jon said:

"The last time I spoke to Mady and Cara was 2014. I periodically text Mady and Cara to see if I get a response and at this point, I’ve never heard from them."
