Queen of Pop Lady Gaga got candid in her recent interview with Rolling Stone. On the cover, she candidly discussed her struggles and coping with mental health in the feature interview.

One of her most significant revelations concerned her experience filming the acclaimed movie A Star Is Born alongside Bradley Cooper. She revealed that she was on lithium, a mood-stabilizing medication prescribed to help prevent episodes of mania. The filming took place in 2017, and later that year, she went on her Joanne World Tour. She described experiencing a psychotic break during the tour, which led her to cancel the last 10 shows and end it early in 2018.

She shared,

"There was one day that my sister said to me, ‘I don’t see my sister anymore. And I canceled the tour. There was one day I went to the hospital for psychiatric care. I needed to take a break. I couldn’t do anything … I completely crashed. It was really scary. There was a time where I didn’t think I could get better."
She added, "I feel really lucky to be alive. I know that might sound dramatic, but we know how this can go.”

Lady Gaga further spoke about how being with her fiancé, Michael Polansky, helped with her mental health and brought her back to who she was.

“Being in love with someone that cares about the real me made a very big difference, how do you learn how to be yourself with someone when you don’t know how to be yourself with anyone?”

Earlier this year, the Poker Face singer also opened up about these issues in an episode of The Interview podcast from The New York Times. Expressing the same struggles and journey she went through, the singer shared how five years ago she

"had psychosis. I was not deeply in touch with reality for a while. It took me out of life in a big way, and after a lot of years of hard work, I got myself back."

She further added,

"It was a hard time, and it was actually really special when I met my partner because when I met Michael, I was in a much better place, but I remember him saying to me, pretty early on, ‘I know you could be a lot happier than you are. It was really hard for me to hear him say that because I didn’t want him to think that of me. I wanted him to think I was like this happy, totally together person.”
“From the moment that I met Michael, he had the most warm and kind disposition of maybe anyone that I had met in my whole life,” she explained.

Lady Gaga's 2025 journey

Bouncing back from the difficult journey Lady Gaga has gone through, it is sufficient to say that she has had an exemplary year. After taking a break from her avant-garde music style and focusing on her acting career with Joker 2, she returned to music this year with a new album titled Mayhem. The album received seven Grammy nominations, the second highest, just after Kendrick Lamar.

About the album, she said,

"It was months and months and months of rediscovering everything that I’d lost. And I honestly think that’s why it’s called Mayhem. Because what it took to get it back was crazy.”

On top of that, Lady Gaga played two major music events this year, headlining Coachella. She also performed a free concert at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, which drew an audience of two million people, breaking Madonna's record.
