Matthias Schoenaerts has hit a legal roadblock off-screen. The Belgian actor, 47, was sentenced in absentia to six months in prison and fined €4,000 (approximately $4,650) for driving without a valid licence following a history of traffic violations and a recent arrest in Pelt.

According to Belgian outlet VRT, the DC Universe star was stopped twice in April while driving his motorcycle in Pelt, Limburg, despite the driving ban in Antwerp that has been in place since 2021.

The previous ban arose from DUI, which also required him to take "recovery tests," but he never completed them.

Per the Beringen court records, Matthias Schoenaerts has been previously convicted 11 times for driving-related violations. He also didn't show up in court for the latest ruling, in which he was sentenced in absentia. Notwithstanding, the actor still has the right to file an appeal.

Meanwhile, Matthias Schoenaerts' six-month sentence reportedly doesn't cover the recent incident involving the actor. Last week, the Brothers By Blood star was incarcerated in Pelt following his refusal to take a breathalyzer test and, again, for driving without a valid license. Per the police, Schoenaerts was uncooperative. The case remains unresolved.

Matthias Schoenaerts stars in Supergirl in 2026

Matthias Schoenaerts stars as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills in the forthcoming Supergirl, a standalone Craig Gillespie-helmed movie, now in post-production. The film is slated to debut in theaters in July 2026.

The 47-year-old actor also appears in the upcoming biblical movie The Way of the Wind, which is set to debut sometime in 2026. The project is also currently in post-production.

His last movie before the sentencing was in The Old Guard 2, released in July, where he played the role of Booker / Sébastien Le Livre. He also co-starred with Charlie Theron, KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, and Luca Marinelli.

More about Matthias Schoenaerts

Matthias Schoenaerts was born in Antwerp, Flanders, on Dec. 8, 1977. His father was Julien Schoenaerts, also an actor; and Dominique Wiche, a costume designer and French teacher.

When he was 9, he appeared in a stage production for The Little Prince, which was both starred in and directed by his father. His mother was also the costume designer of the play.

Schoenaerts was already on the books of the Belgian team Beerschot AC when he quit football at 16. In a 2015 interview, the actor opened up about his supposed career:

"I have a very interesting problem with authority. I hate when people tell me what to do and when to do it. And when I was 16, and getting close to the first team and becoming a professional, all of a sudden I had a whole bunch of people telling me what to do and how to do it. That never really worked for me."
