In April 2025, fashion designer Misa Hylton filed a lawsuit against singer Mary J Blige, which was worth $5 million. As per reports, the lawsuit was filed because Blige withheld rapper Vado’s finished album and forced him to no longer be in touch with Hylton. Blige allegedly wanted Vado to join her team instead.

Meanwhile, as per a report by AllHipHop, Blige wanted to take the lawsuit from a civil court to a business court, and her request was denied. According to Judge Suzanne J. Adams:

“The complexity of the case, the choice of law issues, and the amount in controversy do not warrant transfer to the Commercial Division.”

In the lawsuit, Hylton also wanted an injunction to be issued, which would prevent Blige from meddling in her business ventures. Reportedly, both parties wanted to settle the issues in private, but at one point, there was no response from Blige’s end, and hence, Hylton had to seek help from the court.

After Misa Hylton filed the lawsuit, Mary J Blige and her team reacted to it. According to Billboard, their statement was:

“Plaintiffs and their counsel appear to enjoy fabricating accusations that will be discussed in the press and on social media for the purposes of harassing defendants and trying to coerce a favorable settlement.”

Mary J Blige’s lawyers also said that Hylton and her lawyers had plenty of time to look into the issues, both before filing the case and after they received a detailed letter explaining why each claim was weak. Despite that, they chose not to drop the case and instead pushed it even further.
