I Know What You Did Last Summer serves as a sequel to the eponymous 1998 film. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the film had its premiere at LA's The United Theater on Broadway and is scheduled to be released on July 18, 2025. The story is written by Robinson and Leah McKendrick, with Robinson also penning the screenplay alongside Sam Lansky. Here is the official synopsis as per Letterboxd,
When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge.
Two characters played by Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Lola Tung, who were supposed to appear in the film, have been removed. Robinson explained why.
Here's why these two roles were removed from I Know What You Did Last Summer
I Know What You Did Last Summer was supposed to star Lola Tung and Alexander Chavez. However, their respective roles were cut from the final film. In an interview with People magazine, the film's director, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, revealed why. She said,
“In every movie, it’s best laid plans, and then you edit the movie and you put it together and you go, ‘I love this in a vacuum. This is a fantastic scene. But it doesn’t fit in the movie."
She elaborated that the edits had nothing to do with actors' performances.
"It was just one of those situations where it had nothing to do with Lola and Nicholas — they are both so fantastic. I really would love to work with them again. I loved working with them. They did a fabulous job. But in the larger tapestry of the film, it just didn’t fit.”
Jennifer added,
“[It] sucks because you don’t want to do that to those actors and it sucks when you love something as a scene but that scene just doesn’t work in the final cut of the film.”
In I Know What You Did Last Summer, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson from the first film. Neal H. Moritz is the producer.
The film is scheduled for release on July 18, 2025.
