Patrick Mahomes recently spoke about his father's DWI arrest ahead of the Super Bowl.

During the recent episode of Chief's Kingdom, an ESPN original series, the quarterback, 29, reflected on the emotional turmoil that ensued after his father got hit with his third DWI charge. He was referencing the debacle that unfolded on Feb. 3, 2024, a week before he and his team, the Chiefs, were set to play in the Super Bowl.

"It was during that Super Bowl. It became a story, and so, I had to answer questions about it," Patrick Mahomes recalled on the episode, which aired on August 20. "I think just knowing that it hurt me woke him up to know that like, you can't keep doing the same things."

His father, Mahomes Sr., 55, who once played as a pitcher for the New York Mets, also weighed in:

"It kind of hit home before the Super Bowl last year, when I got in trouble. For him to have to answer questions about me was probably the most embarrassing thing I've ever been through in my life." He continued, “I think just knowing that it hurt me, woke him up to know that like you can’t keep doing the same things."

Patrick Mahomes addresses his father's past convictions

According to The New York Post, Mahomes Sr. has a long history of arrests and stints in jail for driving under the influence. Back in February, he spent 10 days behind bars. He was looking at up to a decade behind bars at the time, but was eventually let go with a favorable deal. Per Yahoo Sports, this included five years of probation with “intense” supervision in the first year.

In the episode, he reflected on how he reacted when Patrick Mahomes was questioned about his father's antics after his Super Bowl game, and how he handled it. At the time, the Chiefs came out on top against the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22. Patrick Mahomes was responsible for throwing for 333 yards and two touchdowns.

“I called him right after … I said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry that it’s taken away from your time and focus.’ … I made a vow that he would never have to deal with anything because of drinking because of me. I haven’t had a drink since then,” Mahomes Sr. said.

Brittany, Patrick Mahomes' wife, also weighed in on her father-in-law’s sobriety journey:

“I think it finally hit him that, you know, ‘I have my kids watching me, I have my grandkids now that are watching me,'” she said. “He really enjoys watching his son play football and live out his dream.”

Mahomes concurred:

“For him to be there supporting me, that’s really cool cause those moments are just moments that you won’t ever get again and he’s been there for all of them this last year,” he said.

Back in February, during the Super Bowl Opening Night, Patrick Mahomes was questioned about his father's arrest, though he chose to remain mum about it.

"Yeah he's doing good," Mahomes said, per CBS Sports. "I haven't -- I don't want to really get into it too much, but he's doing good for whatever the situation is. It's a family matter so I'll just keep it to the family and that's all I really have to say at this point."

Patrick has turned out to a legend in the making in the NFL and has a huge fanbase.
