Legendary actress Sally Kirkland has passed away at the age of 84. Her representative confirmed she died in hospice care early on November 11, 2025. She had entered hospice care at a facility in Palm Springs as her health continued to decline.

Reports by Page Six state that in recent months, Kirkland had faced several major health challenges. These included a dementia diagnosis, multiple fractures, serious infections, and a badly-reported fall. At the same time, her friends launched a crowdfunding campaign to help with her medical and care costs. The fund raised over $60,000.

What led to Sally Kirkland's hospice care?

Sally Kirkland was placed in hospice after facing over a year of serious health issues. Her representative stated that she had had dementia for over the last year. In the GoFundMe page created in November 2024, it was updated that she broke her bones, including in her neck, right wrist, and left hip. She also had 2 life-threatening infections.

The fundraiser also said that while she was bathing and alone, she fell in the shower, causing some injuries to her ribs and foot, as well as some increased bruising and cuts. Her insurance did not cover the high costs of her longer hospital stay and rehab facility, as she had exceeded the 100 days catered to by the insurance cover. She and her team indicated she had significant out-of-pocket expenses beyond what she could handle with savings and her pension.

Due to finding her in her age, illnesses, injuries, and needing 24/7 care, her team of practitioners placed her in hospice to receive the care needed for her recovery. Her representative indicated she was "resting comfortably" under supervised care, as well as surrounded by family and friends.

Sally Kirkland's GoFundMe campaign and what it revealed

In November 2024, Kirkland's friends launched a GoFundMe titled "Support Sally Kirkland's Urgent Medical Care." The goal was US $65,000. By late 2024/early 2025, the fund had raised over US $60,000 from 600+ donors.

The description said her savings had been significantly impacted by bad investment advice in 2007 and by changes in her insurance coverage. These issues had left her in a vulnerable financial position exactly when her medical needs soared.

The updates indicated she required 24/7 care in a specialized facility and that her health had "continued to struggle." They also noted that she was without a spouse or children to depend on. Her friends said she was a selfless person who had been there for everyone else and now needed their help.

Kirkland had a career that spanned six decades. She received a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for the 1987 film, Anna. Her credits spanned films like Bruce Almighty and television shows like Roseanne. It is the end of a significant time in entertainment. What resonates now is how her final years had been filled with health decline and care costs. Sally Kirkland had a legacy of bold performances and bold living. May she rest in peace.
