Scottie Scheffler just won the 2025 PGA Championship, and per People Magazine, Nike celebrated Scheffler's win by lightheartedly joking about his 2024 arrest. The post is also shared on Scheffler's account.
Scottie Schaffler was arrested in 2024 for misdemeanor charges after he reportedly drove around an accident site on a median to enter the 2024 PGA golf course, despite a police officer at the site stopping him. It is reported that charges against Scheffler were dropped because the prosecution had enough evidence to corroborate Scheffler's claim that the incident happened due to a misunderstanding.
So, what exactly did Nike Post? After Scottie Scheffler won the 2025 PGA Championship on May 18, Nike took to their Instagram to post a photo of Scheffler taking a swing, and on the photo it says,
"Best player in the world? Guilty."
The post caption further states that,
The verdict is in. World No. 1 @scottie.scheffler is the PGA Champion.
More about Scottie Scheffler's arrest in 2024.
According to reports from multiple publications, a year ago, on May 17, 2024, golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police on Friday in front of the Valhalla Golf Club (PGA site of 2024).
According to multiple reports, there were police at the scene as part of a different incident in which a pedestrian was killed by a shuttle bus while attempting to cross the street. Due to this, traffic in the area was slightly controlled, but cars with PGA stickers on them were allowed to pass into the course.

Officer Gillis, who was at the site controlling traffic, stopped a bus from passing and asked it to turn around. He momentarily stopped traffic to let the bus pivot. Scottie Scheffler, reportedly unaware of the accident, tried to drive around the crash site via the median.
According to ESPN, he continued forward despite the police officer trying to stop him. But as he continued driving, the officer latched onto the car. Though AP News reports that Scheffler's lawyer stated that, according to eyewitnesses, the police officer was not dragged by the World No. 1 golfer.
According to the police report, Scheffler “refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging" the arresting officer, Gillis. The officer claimed that his pants were damaged, and he even suffered injuries in the fall.
But later, a video surveillance released by the police shows Officer Gillis chasing Scheffler on foot, stopping him, and arresting him. But, there is no footage of the officer being dragged, and the officer was disciplined for not activating his body cam during the arrest.
According to AP news, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell decided to drop charges against Scheffler because,
“The evidence we reviewed supports the conclusion that Detective Gillis was concerned for public safety at the scene when he initiated contact with Mr. Scheffler”
O’Connell added,
“However, Mr. Scheffler’s actions and the evidence surrounding their exchange during this misunderstanding do not satisfy the elements of any criminal offenses.”
Scottie Scheffler talked about the incident and shared that it was an "unfortunate misunderstanding". He finished that year's PGA tournament tied in eighth position.
