Constantine 2 is a sequel that has been doing the rounds for several years. Over a period of time, several filmmakers have shown interest in doing it. However, nothing concrete has happened so far. The first film, starring Keanu Reeves, was released on February 18, 2005. It was a critical and commercial success and has amassed a cult following.
Recently, DC Studios chief James Gunn spoke about the sequel. He revealed that he has had discussions with Reeves. Let's explore what exactly he said and if there is a sequel on the cards that will materialize in the future.
James Gunn talks about Constantine 2
James Gunn recently appeared on the BobaTalks podcast, where he spoke about Constantine 2. He said,
“I’ve discussed it on and off. I’ve discussed it with Keanu [Reeves] but I have not read any script yet.”
In February this year, Francis Lawrence (who directed the first film) told Collider that he is closer than before to doing a sequel.
“I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing."
He added,
“We have gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things. [It has been] in the back of our minds for 20 years and just kind of percolating on ideas, and stories and characters we love, and ideas we love.”
Subsequently, Keanu Reeves revealed that he and Lawrence had pitched a treatment to the studio and the latter was interested. Reeves had also said that they have been trying to make Constantine 2 for more than a decade. In 2023, Lawrence had said that the plans to write a sequel were halted due to the Hollywood strikes.
The first film was written by Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello, and it was loosely inspired by Hellbazer's namesake comic book series. Reeves played the role of John Constantine, who is an exorcist with the power to visit Hell and talk to half-demons as well as half-angels. It was produced by Lauren Shuler Donner, Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Erwin Stoff, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and Akiva Goldsman. Besides Reeves, the film also starred Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Djimon Hounsou, Gavin Rossdale and Peter Stormare.
Fans of the first film are reportedly still waiting for any substantial update regarding the sequel.
