Jason Bourne’s future has seen much uncertainty ever since Matt Damon's last stint with the franchise in 2016. As fans have kept their hopes up for their favorite amnesiac spy's return, the film finally has an update from director Edward Berger.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Berger confirmed that he is still linked to the sixth project and addressed a burning question: Is Matt Damon going to return for the sixth movie? Here's what the director has to say.
"I’m in developing a Bourne movie, and I will do it if Matt wants to do it. If we can really have the feeling that we are adding something new to the great Bourne films that were already. That will be necessary to make Matt want to do it, and to make me want to do it. I would love nothing more than to make a big-budget, expensive, fun movie that embraces the audience. But these movies are also hard to find because I still don’t want to make something that I feel other people have treaded 20 times."
This update is a more hopeful one, considering Berger's uncertainty with the project as he opened up about it's development in 2024. In an interview with Cinema Daily US, he had said that he was not working on it at the time and was unsure about the project's future.
Needless to say, a sixth Jason Bourne film is certainly in the works and there's still hope that Damon might get on board for a second time as the spy. Further details are awaited as of now.
More details about Jason Bourne 6
After 2016's Jason Bourne hit screens starring Matt Damon, talk of a sequel began almost immediately. Producer Frank Marshall expressed optimism in 2016, and by 2019 producer Ben Smith revealed a new film was in development with ties to the Treadstone television series. In late 2023, reports confirmed a sixth film was officially moving forward with Oscar-winning director Edward Berger attached. Early speculation suggested either Damon’s return or a new lead in the vein of The Bourne Legacy.
Momentum, however, has been uneven. In early 2024 Damon praised Berger but hesitated to commit at age 53. That fall, Production Weekly listed a working title, The Bourne Dilemma, which soon shifted to Jason Bourne: Exodus on databases like IMDb and Mubi.
The franchise’s future was thrown into further question in 2025 when Universal’s rights briefly lapsed. Ludlum’s estate shopped the series to potential buyers until NBCUniversal reclaimed it in August, securing perpetual control of the Bourne and Treadstone properties.
However, despite all this, Edward Berger's comments imply that behind the scenes, work is definitely happening as we speak. Hopefully it includes Matt Damon once again, and a lot of high-octane action.
All the Jason Bourne films are available to stream on Prime Video.
