As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow, many fans have wondered if favorites like Iron Man and Captain America will ever return to screens.
Although Robert Downey Jr has rejoined the MCU as Doctor Doom and Chris Evans has denied rumours of returning as Captain America, the characters' fates have been a topic of discussion. In the comics, the resurrection of characters, including Iron Man, is highly possible, which gives fans a lot of hope for the fan-favorite superheroes.
In a recent press conference, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Iron Man and Captain America will be recast, per Variety. As Marvel looks toward a major reset post-Secret Wars, recasting legacy heroes isn’t off the table. The question isn’t if Iron Man and Captain America will come back; it’s how and when.
As reported by Variety, Feige compared the possible recasting to DC's new Superman- David Corenswet and the latest reports of Amazon MGM Studios searching for a new James Bond.
“Amy Pascal and David Heyman are now searching for a new James Bond. “David [Corenswet], the new Superman — he was awesome. That will always be the case,” he said.
He then talked about how it would be difficult to recast Iron Man and Captain America and said,
"I think it’s hard for anybody to do that when an actor has done such a great role. How are they going to ever replace Sean Connery [as James Bond], right?”
What Kevin Feige has revealed about Avengers: Secret Wars
Feige also left fans with a little something to think about Marvel's upcoming film Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set to hit screens in 2027.
“We’re utilizing that [story] not just to round out the stories we’ve been telling post-‘Endgame,’ just as importantly — and you can look at the at the ‘Secret Wars’ comics for where that takes you — it very, very much sets us up for the future. ‘Endgame,’ literally, was about endings. ‘Secret Wars’ is about is about beginnings.”
When asked if Secret Wars will be a reboot for the MCU, he denied using the phrase and instead called it a "reset."
“Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines. ‘X-Men’ is where that will happen next," Feige said.
The upcoming X-Men movie, which will be helmed by Jake Schreier, who made Thunderbolts*, is where Marvel has their eyes next. As confirmed by Feige, the characters will be reintroduced with newer actors, moving the iconic franchise forward.
“They have been a place to tell stories about young people who feel different and who feel Other and who feel like they don’t belong. That’s the universal story of mutants, and that is where we’re going.”
For now, Marvel is looking forward to Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to hit theaters in 2026. A part of the studio's sixth phase, the film is set to bring together several Marvel teams, bringing back some of the most iconic characters in the franchise for a star-studded project.
Avengers: Doomsday will be in theaters on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will be in theaters on December 17, 2027.
