The seas have been quiet, but whispers of Pirates of the Caribbean 6 are once again echoing across the horizon. At the heart of it all is the one question fans won’t let sink: will Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow make a grand return? While Disney continues to play coy, Orlando Bloom has just dropped a curious breadcrumb, sending the fandom into a speculative storm.
Talking about the film in an interview on This Morning, the actor addressed the speculation, and dare we say, things are looking quite positive for Jack Sparrow. Bloom told host Ben Shephard,
"There’s been all kinds of things. Who knows? There’s been talk. I can’t say anything at the moment, because I really don’t know. They're definitely... I think they’re trying to work out what it would all look like. I, personally, think it would be great to get the band back together. That would be great. But there are always different ideas, so we’ll see where it lands."
Depp's return to the franchise in the most iconic role of his career is a spectacle that most of us are waiting for. Although the actor has stayed away from the spotlight in recent years, another stint as Jack Sparrow will surely be a celebrated return for Depp.
What do we know about Pirates of the Caribbean 6?
The seas are still stormy, but the Black Pearl might just set sail again, though who is on board is the real mystery. Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has seen multiple updates—both positive and negative—but here's what we have so far.
Disney has been eyeing a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film since Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, with early talk of shooting parts five and six back-to-back. That didn’t pan out, but by 2017, director Joachim Rønning hinted that Dead Men Tell No Tales was only the beginning of the end.
In 2019, Craig Mazin and franchise veteran Ted Elliott were tapped to pen the next chapter. By 2023, Mazin said their script was “too weird,” but Disney bought it. Then the writers' strike hit, and everything paused.
Cast-wise? It’s been a whirlwind. Kaya Scodelario is contractually ready to return, Orlando Bloom has said he’s open to it, and Keira Knightley has gracefully bowed out. And Johnny Depp? After a very public fallout with Disney, he declared he was done, but in 2023, rumors swirled he might be open to coming back if the story was right.
Now, in 2024, there are two Pirates of the Caribbean projects in the works: a fresh reboot with no returning characters (yet) and a Margot Robbie-led film that’s still floating around. Bruckheimer says he wants both, and he’s still rooting for Depp’s return. As of now, the project is still seeing speculations, and more updates are awaited for now.
All the Pirates of the Caribbean films are available to stream on Disney+.
