Margot Robbie has played several iconic characters in her acting career so far. One of them is Harley Quinn in the 2016 film Suicide Squad and its namesake standalone sequel in 2021. She eventually did a standalone film called 2020's Birds of Prey, which she also co-produced.
James Gunn, who has kick-started a new DCU, recently revealed whether the Australian actress will reprise the role in the future. Gunn is co-heading DC Studios with Peter Safran and directed the recently released superhero film Superman. Let's find out what Gunn said about Robbie's possible return to the new DC Universe.
James Gunn reveals whether Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn
James Gunn recently spoke to EW, where he was asked if Margot Robbie would return as Harley Quinn in the DCU. He said,
“That will be revealed down the line."
Given that Gunn didn't deny it, there is a chance that Robbie will be seen in future projects of the DCU. He also plans to introduce Idris Elba's Bloodsport universe into the franchise.
“I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out. So we’ll see what happens.”
Superman was released on July 11, 2025, and grossed $583.2 million at the box office. It also kick-started Chapter One: Gods and Monsters from the DCU. Gunn has said that he is writing a follow-up to the film, which will not be a direct sequel, but it will feature the Man of Steel.
Meanwhile, Margot Robbie was last seen in Greta Gerwig's fantasy comedy film Barbie, where she played the titular character. It was the first live-action film adaptation of the namesake Mattel doll. The film was a critical and commercial success. Since then, the actress has produced or executive produced projects like Saltburn, My Old A*s, and Borderline.
Robbie will be next seen in Kogonada's romantic fantasy film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, co-starring Colin Farrell. The film will be released by Sony Pictures on September 19, 2025. Her next project is the Gothic psychological drama Wuthering Heights, written and directed by Emerald Fennell. It's adapted from Emily Brontë's namesake 1847 novel and is produced by Fennell and Robbie. The latter is playing the role of Catherine Earnshaw in it. Warner Bros. will be releasing it theatrically on February 13, 2026.
