Taika Waititi's Star Wars film has long been a popular discussion among the audience, as fans are eagerly waiting for the Jojo Rabbit director to work with the franchise. After rumors ensued in 2019 and 2020 about his involvement in the project, it was finally announced in May 2020 that Waititi is collaborating with Lucasfilm for a Star Wars movie that he would write and direct alongside Krysty Wilson-Cairns. However, Cairns later dropped out, and Waititi became the sole director of the project, which he would also most likely be a part of as cast.
Even though reports have shared that the film started filming in 2024, there have not been any updates on the project until now.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy has shared an update that the project is happening, but is taking a second lead among other projects in priority. Needless to say, a Star Wars film would take significant time, and Taika Waititi, the genius he is, is taking his sweet time to work on what would most definitely be a masterpiece. Kennedy's statement said:
"Taika is on Taika time… I've just continually said to him, look, when you feel that you're ready and you can really devote the time, we're going to do it. We'll be waiting… I'm just hoping we get there. That will be a great Star Wars movie."
Taika Waititi as a filmmaker

Throughout his career, Taika Waititi has made fewer but significant films that have explored several genres. The director has won an Academy Award for his film Jojo Rabbit, which he wrote, directed, and starred in as Adolf Hitler. It was a satirical dark comedy on the Nazis' rule and the Holocaust. The film was praised by many, noting its ability to touch on sensitive topics with a dash of harmless comedy and the emotional core of the story that explored the horrors of Hitler's rule. Waititi's role as Hitler was the highlight. He starred as one of Jojo, the protagonist’s, figments of imagination as he motivates him to join the Nazi army. The Academy Award was a testament to Waititi's creative genius, as it remains one of the best films made about the Holocaust.
He has also worked on two Marvel films, Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, both of which he directed, and in the latter, he is also credited as a writer. He has also starred in both as Korg, through the use of motion capture.
Taika Waititi's next project is Klara and the Sun, a dystopian science fiction film based on Kazuo Ishiguro's novel of the same name. It is currently under production.
