William Shatner reveals he has watched only one Star Trek film in his life despite playing Kirk: Here’s why

William Shatner is best remembered for playing the role of James T. Kirk in the science-fiction franchise Star Trek. He played the lead in three seasons of the television series Star Trek: The Original Series between 1966 and 1969. He then went on to portray Kirk in the feature films as well.

In one of his interviews, the actor revealed that he has only seen one Star Trek film. He said:

"It’s all painful because I don’t like the way I look and what I do."

William Shatner has seen only one Star Trek movie

William Shatner spoke to People Magazine in 2021, where he revealed that he has not watched Star Trek films and television shows. This news is coming despite playing James Kirk across decades in different media. He said,

“I have never watched Star Trek. There are many episodes I don’t know, there are some movies I don’t know. It’s all painful because I don’t like the way I look and what I do”.

He then revealed that he had seen one of them, which he had directed, out of necessity.

"I directed one of the movies, number five, I had to watch that one”.

William Shatner first portrayed James T. Kirk, who is the captain of USS Enterprise, in Star Trek: The Original Series between 1966 and 1969. He played the main role in its three seasons. In the 1970s, Shatner also lent his voice to Star Trek: The Animated Series. He then went on to do feature films, including Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, among others.

The franchise has gone through several changes over the years. It went through a reboot back in 2009 with J.J. Abrams directing the project. Its sequel, Star Trek into Darkness, was released in 2013. Justin Lin then went on to helm Star Trek Beyond. One of the recent entries in the franchise was Star Trek: Section 31, which is a television film that was released on January 24, 2025.
