Sophie Cunningham, who had previously released a video on TikTok slamming some referees, has now revealed that she had been fined $500 for doing so. According to Dexerto, the Indiana Fever player took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the decision that the WNBA had taken against her, despite her never referencing any referee by name. Her post read:
“I got fined $500 for this TikTok. Idk why this is funny to me…like ok you got it bud! Cause there’s not more important things to be worried about with our league right now."
This is not the first time Sophie Cunningham has been fined. Just last month, she was fined $400 after she shoved Jacy Sheldon of the Connecticut Sun, who had previously slammed Caitlin Clark in her face earlier in the game.
More about the controversy, as Sophie Cunningham reveals that she has been fined by the WNBA
Sophie Cunningham, who has a huge following on her social media accounts, particularly on TikTok, released a video that jokingly took a dig at some referees. In the video, she can be seen lip-syncing to the lead single titled "Manchild" from Sabrina Carpenter's 2025 album, "Man's Best Friend," which is set to release later this year.
Through her video, Sophie Cunningham can be seen making a lighthearted effort to joke about how some referees take a long time to make up their minds regarding a decision, and she can be seen mouthing the lines to the song, saying, "Stupid. Or is it slow? Maybe, it's useless."
After she was fined, Sophie Cunningham put up the post on X (formerly Twitter), saying that the league should focus on much more important and pressing issues concerning them at the moment instead of focusing on her video.
This action by the WNBA has shocked many fans as well, with many of them taking to social media to show their support of their beloved shooting guard. This user said,
"That is crazy work by the WNBA. They should fine the refs for being awful. I'm glad you are keeping the video up. 💪"
One fan wrote,
"She’s doubling down 😂 I would too."
Another netizen said,
"The league makes no money so it cannot pay the players or the referees, so this video is equivalent to government employees complaining about other government employees."
"Sophie got fined for speaking the truth. How about they fix the refs and give the players a real All-Star Break. What a disgrace," retorted another.
The WNBA has recently been slammed by a string of controversies after several prominent players like Kiki Iriafen and Caitlin Clark wore jerseys that read, "Pay us what you owe us" at the Indiana Fevers vs. Washington Mystics game last Saturday.
