Spencer Hatcher said he has been overwhelmed by the support from fans after the violent death of his mother. The country singer uploaded a short message to Instagram weeks after Holly Hatcher, 62, was killed inside the family’s Virginia home on Aug. 3.
Spencer Hatcher shared on September 9,
"I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all the love and support that you all have shown me and my family over the last month. In what has really been the worst time of our life, you all sent so many loving comments and messages and made posts and everything. We did our best to read them, but I just want you all to know how appreciative we are and I am of you all."
As per E! News, police identified the intruder as Kevin Walker. Investigators stated he stabbed Holly before turning on her husband, Michael. During the struggle, Michael fired a shot from the handgun he retrieved from his car, killing Walker. Deputies said they found Michael injured when they arrived.
Spencer Hatcher says his mother’s memory drives him to keep making music:
Reflecting on his loss, Spencer Hatcher described how central his mother had been to his journey in music. He shared,
"My mom was my biggest fan and my biggest supporter in everything that I did, she loved the music. She loved everything about it. She loved the music, she loved the shows. And after a lot of thought and prayer and speaking to my label about continuing, you know, I 100% made the decision that I want to continue making music and bringing smiles to people's faces and being out on the stage and everything."
Spencer Hatcher added that the strength to move forward came from his mother’s example. He promised to continue performing, telling fans,
"She would want me to keep on, and I know how much she loved it, and I know how much y’all love it. I'm not gonna quit. I'm gonna keep on going and go as hard as I possibly can like I always have. I want you all to come along on this journey with me as I get back into it. I just appreciate you all and everything that you all have done for me and will continue to do for me."
The singer noted that a busy tour schedule had already been in place before the tragedy. Spencer Hatcher ended the post with another expression of gratitude:
"My mom was real excited about all the opportunities and all the music. I hope that you all are just as excited about it as she was. I hope that one day we can all be together where I can thank you in person. I love y'all, God bless."
Spencer Hatcher postpones shows, shares gratitude amid family’s monumental loss:
As per E! News, Michael Hatcher appeared alongside his sons in an Aug. 8 video, speaking with a bandage on his right arm as he thanked the community for its compassion. With the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, he shared on Facebook,
“There's no way for you to know the trauma and the pain and the unanswered questions that I have had [and] that my three sons, Dane, Spencer and Connor have had, each of you have made it much more bearable through your outpouring of love and your caring and your kindness and support to all of us, and for that, I thank you so much.”
Officials later confirmed no charges would be pursued since the intruder had died at the scene. Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson called the incident unlike anything he had come across in more than three decades in uniform. As per the CBS station, WTVR, Hutcheson explained,
“This is a highly unusual, apparently completely random [attack] with an individual with no known history of violent behavior of any kind, or even criminal behavior of any kind, with 31 years in law enforcement for me, I have never seen anything like it in my entire career.”
For Spencer Hatcher, the loss meant stepping away from music temporarily. He postponed three shows that had been scheduled for August, including appearances at VOA Country Music Fest and the Butler County Fair. He told followers,
"It is with a heavy heart and overwhelming sadness that, due to a monumental loss in our family, I must cancel my upcoming shows… I hope to make these dates up to my fans in the future, we ask that everyone please respect our family's privacy at this time."
The singer has chosen to stay connected to music, with a few performances scheduled for the end of the year, according to his website. His latest release is titled, When She Calls Me Cowboy.
