George Clooney, 63, recently discussed the different reactions he received after speaking out against Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election.
The world-renowned star had a chat with CNN host Jake Tapper and stated that it was his "civic duty" to stand against the former U.S. President last year. While many defenders called his remark "brave", he is unsure "if it was brave."
While chatting with Jake about the public outrage, George Clooney shared,
"You have to take your stand if you believe in it."
Here's what George Clooney thinks about speaking out against Joe Biden
The Oscar-winning actor expressed his thoughts about urging Joe Biden to conclude his re-election campaign in 2024. His comments during that time stirred a debate online, with him getting mixed responses about his opinions.
In this recent conversation, George Clooney claimed to feel at peace despite all the backlash, especially on the internet. According to a variety report, the host reminded him that the actor's defenders believed it was a brave choice.
Listening to this reaction, Clooney stated,
"I don’t know if it was brave. It was a civic duty because I found that people on my side of the street, you know, I’m a Democrat in Kentucky so I get it. When I saw people on my side of the street not telling the truth, I thought that was time to… some people [are mad], sure. That’s okay, you know, listen the idea of freedom of speech is you can’t demand freedom of speech and then say, 'But don’t say bad things about me.'"
Disclosing what he thinks about making a choice and taking a stand, he further continued,
"Take a stand, stand for it, and then deal with the consequences. That’s the rules. So when people criticize me, they criticized me for my stance against the war 20 years ago, people picketed my movies and they put me on a deck of cards."
All these criticisms and judgements do not affect George Clooney to a huge extent. Instead, he has a unique approach to receiving disapproval. He later remarked,
"I have to take that, that’s fair. I’m okay with that, I’m okay with criticism for where I stand. I defend their right to criticize me as much as I defend my right to criticize them."
In July 2024, George grabbed everyone's attention with his op-ed published in The New Yok Times. His piece primarily focused on calling out Joe Biden to end his campaign, considering the results in the first presidential debate of last year.
