After years of delay and anticipation, Zombieland 3 now finally has a hopeful update as director Ruben Fleischer has revealed plans for a third movie and even a potential release date on when we could catch the zombies again. The horror comedy franchise launched Fleischer's career and fans have been waiting for when they will get to see Jesse Eisenberg fighting off zombies again. Speaking to Deadline about what's going on with Zombieland 3, the director said,
"I’m hoping that we’ll do a Zombieland 3 in 2029. We’re starting to talk about that because [the first] one was 2009, and then we did the second one in 2019, and we kind of left that one all saying, “We’ll see you in 10 years.” That’s coming up now, and so we’re starting to figure that out, so I’m hoping that’ll come together. Then, I’ve got a few things that are raring to go, so we’ll see which one comes first."
He then talked about how he was inspired by 28 Days Later for the first film and how it had a huge influence on how Fleischer portrayed zombies in Zombieland, as he added,
"I went and watched every single zombie movie. 28 Days Later was a huge sea change in the world of zombies because prior to that, they were always slow and lumbering, and 28 Days Later was the first movie where they ran. I think it must’ve come out like right before this because I remember it was always intended to be slow-moving zombies, and then we were like, “Oh, we can make them run because they just did it in this other movie!” And so that was a big thing, that they ran. Even when we were planning it, in my memory, they weren’t intended to run."
More details about Zombieland
Zombieland has grown into a cult favorite American franchise built around one simple idea: surviving the apocalypse is easier when you find the right people to run with. At its center is a college kid trying to stay alive during a zombie outbreak who eventually crosses paths with three strangers. Together, they head out on a chaotic road trip through the Southwestern United States in search of a safe haven. Over the years, this world has expanded into two films and a pair of tie in games. The movies are produced by Pariah and 2.0 Entertainment, which operate under Columbia Pictures, a division of Sony Pictures Releasing. The core cast features Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, who embody a mismatched but devoted group of survivors. The films released so far include Zombieland in 2009 and its sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap, in 2019.
Zombieland: Double Tap revisits the same four survivors as they decide to move into the White House. Directed once again by Fleischer, the sequel brought back Reese and Wernick as writers, joined by David Callaham. The film expands on the group’s dynamic and throws them into new dangers, new locations and new versions of the zombies that have evolved over the years.
With a third movie in store, it's clear that the franchise is moving forward steadily. As of now, more details on Zombieland 3 are awaited.
