Zooey Deschanel is finally saying her part in the long-time debate over whether Die Hard is a Christmas film or not. Before hearing Deschanel's opinion, the British Board of Film Classification conducted a poll asking the audience the very same question. The results revealed that 44% of the votes were inclined to believe that Die Hard IS NOT a Christmas film.

However, Deschanel disagrees. During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the New Girl actress finally expressed her thoughts if Die Hard is a festive film or not. In her words:

"It is... It takes place on Christmas."

She continued to support her answer by saying that, although it does not have the core elements of Christmas in the film, it is set during Christmas time, which makes it a Christmas movie for her. She explained:

"And maybe it's not like Elf or something, where there's a magical creature or a magical person or whatever at the center of the film — so it doesn't have that, like, super Christmas forward element — but it has Christmas in the background."

How many Christmas films has Zooey Deschanel appeared in?

Zooey Deschanel has appeared in two Christmas-themed films and one Christmas special television series. Keep reading to learn more about these films.

The first Christmas-themed movie Zooey Deschanel appeared in was the 2003 Christmas comedy film, Elf. Deschanel played the role of Jovie. She was the love interest and potential wife of Buddy Hobbs, played by Will Ferrell. The film was directed by Jon Favreau and written by David Berenbaum.

The second and most recent Christmas film that Deschanel was a part of is Merv. She plays the character of Anna Finch, alongside Charlie Cox, Chris Redd, David Hunt, Wynn Everett, Patricia Heaton, Joey Slotnic, and more. The film was released on December 10.

Deschanel's last holiday-themed work was on NBC's Trolls Holiday, an animated musical Christmas special. Later in the musical, she becomes friends with the Trolls and becomes the queen of the Bergens.

While many have debated about whether Die Hard is a Christmas film or not because it takes place during Christmas, the majority of the population has agreed to categorize it as an action film. However, Zooey Deschanel believes that the 1988 film is to be considered a Christmas movie, despite the minimal Christmas elements.
