The live-action film adaptation of Voltron starring Henry Cavill is set to bypass theatres and head directly to streaming. Fans were looking forward to experiencing the reimagined version of the highly-appreciated 1980s animated series on the big screen, but recent reports confirm that the sci-fi action feature will exclusively debut on Prime Video.

Voltron heads to streaming instead of theatres

Buzz around the industry started when Voltron started filming in December 2024. With a star-studded cast that includes Rita Ora, Sterling K. Brown, and John Kim, expectations were set high for a theatrical release, only for Prime Video to shift gears in April 2025. The streaming giant confirmed its slate of 14 movies for 2026. Despite Amazon’s track record of bringing select titles to the big screen first, Voltron will only be available on the streaming platform.

Since their acquisition of MGM back in 2021, Amazon has dabbled in theatrical releases. The Accountant 2, for instance, earned over $93 million at the global box office. Upcoming films Verity and Masters of the Universe are also set for cinema runs. However, Voltron joins an ever-growing list of Prime exclusive content like G20 starring Viola Davis that skipped theatres entirely and have been available to stream directly.

Everything we know about Voltron so far

Helmed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who has also directed movies like Red Notice, and Skyscraper, the plot is yet to be disclosed. According to a Movieweb report, Marshall said that film will set forth an:

"entirely new generation of pilots."

The film is a reimagined version of the old series, but will retain the old elements that were loved by the fans. Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, The Witcher) lead the cast alongside Daniel Quinn-Toye (Shiro), John Kim (9-1-1), Laura Gordon (Winners & Losers), Tim Griffin (Missing), Samson Kayo (Our Flag Means Death), and Tharanya Tharan (Year Of).

As of now, Prime Video has yet to announce a release date for Voltron. When fans reached out about the news on social media, the official Voltron Instagram responded simply:

"We'll release it when it's ready."

Considering the scope and visual requirements of the project, post-production could easily take most of 2025. While the bypass of theatrical release might upset both Voltron and Cavill fans, its release on Prime Video will ensure that it reaches audiences worldwide. Whether it hits the same highs as The Accountant 2 or breaks new ground in the streaming sci-fi genre remains to be seen — but one thing is certain: the Lions are assembling, and the countdown has begun.
