Make sure you grab The Odyssey ticket for that IMAX 70mm slot before it gets sold out. But wait? Isn't the Christopher Nolan film still a year away? It indeed is, but according to some listings, Nolan fans spotted that pre-booking for the film's premium format screenings, as per a report by The Wrap.

In addition to the IMAX digital projection, the film will play in a 70mm reel format as well. In comparison to a normal 70mm reel, an IMAX 70mm reel is three times larger in frame, offering a wider aspect ratio, a more immersive and detailed cinematic experience in comparison to the normal.

As revealed by the CEO of IMAX, Rich Gelfond, at the latest Cannes Film Festival, Nolan reached out to him and discussed the possibility of filming the movie entirely on an IMAX camera. The director stated:

"I’m going to give you a challenge. If you can figure out how to solve these problems, I’m going to make Odyssey 100% film with film with Imax cameras"

Gelfond added,

"And we’ve solved his problems. So, this will be the first film ever, at least filmed 100%, with Imax cameras."

Why does Christopher Nolan still prefer film stock over digital recording?

The Odyssey director prefers to tell his stories on a traditional canvas rather than a digital one. He reiterates the use of methods that improve the cinematic experience, rather than advanced counterparts. If an IMAX 70mm reel can produce a better picture than digital recording, then you can bet Nolan will prefer the better option.

In a 2012 interview with The Traditionalist, the filmmaker said,

"I've felt increasing pressure to stop shooting film and start shooting video, but I've never understood why. It's cheaper to work on film, it's far better looking, it’s the technology that's been known and understood for a hundred years, and it's extremely reliable. I think, truthfully, it boils down to the economic interest of manufacturers and [a production] industry that makes more money through change rather than through maintaining the status quo."

Later, he added that he'll wait until there is a good reason for him to switch from film stock to digital. Other than IMAX 70mm film, The Odyssey director has also worked with Panavision anamorphic 35mm, Panavision Super 70mm, and VistaVision.

What is The Odyssey about?

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey will tell the story of Odysseus, the main protagonist of Homer's epic of the same name. As of now, several big names have been added to the cast, including Jon Bernthal, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and more.

The trailer hasn't been officially released yet, but according to a report by Deadline, Universal unveiled the trailer before the first screening of Jurassic World Rebirth, released on 4th July. It was also leaked online, where the publication (Deadline) provided a breakdown of the teaser in its story published earlier this month.
