Nonnas filming locations: Where was the Netflix comedy filmed?

The Netflix comedy film Nonnas has been filmed in New York and New Jersey.

Helmed by Stephen Chbosky, this film explores food in relation to relationships, family, love, and loss. Based on a true story, the film follows the plot of a man named Joe Scaravella, who builds a restaurant in memory of his deceased mother.

He brings together a group of four Nonnas, that is, Italian grandmothers, to work in his restaurant, Enoteca Maria, as chefs. The film stars Vince Vaughn, Susan Sarandon, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Lorraine Bracco, Joe Manganiello, Drea de Matteo, Linda Cardellini, etc.

Nonnas filming locations: Where was the Netflix comedy filmed?

The filming of Nonnas has been done in New Jersey and New York. The real-life restaurant, Enoteca Maria, is located in Staten Island, New York City. So parts of the film have been shot in New York City, but also in several locations across New Jersey, as New Jersey serves as its primary filming location.

The shooting took place two years ago in the year 2023, commencing in the month of May. However, the filming process got delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, and the filming finally concluded in the last half of September 2023.

1) Middlesex County, New Jersey

Some scenes of the early life of Joe, before he opened the restaurant, have been shot in Edison, Middlesex County.

Within that location, the Raritan Valley Bus Station has been filmed as the place where Joe used to work previously. Some famous places in the area include Roosevelt Park, Oak Tree Pond, and many more.

2) New York City, New York

Since the original restaurant is situated in Staten Island, New York City has been one of the filming locations for shooting some added scenes.

Within New York City, 44 East 14th Street is the location where the filming has been done. In the master shots, restaurants such as Taqueria El Gallo Azteca at 75 Victory Boulevard have been filmed and showcased in the film, along with the Staten Island Ferry.

3) Union County, New Jersey

Some of the most imperative sequences of the film have been shot in this location, which includes the ones at the restaurant. Within Union County, the architecture at 714 3rd Avenue was filmed as the restaurant.

Previously in this particular building, a historical Italian restaurant, dating since the year 1932, Spirito's, was located there. But during COVID, the restaurant came to an end after 100 years of its existence.

4) Passaic County, New Jersey

Some scenes of the film have been shot in Paterson, Passaic County, which is also recognised as the Silk City.

Within Paterson, locations such as Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park and Downtown Paterson have been integral in the filming. One can view the great falls in the background of some scenes in the film.

5) Hudson County, New Jersey

Many locations, such as Hoboken, Bayonne, and Jersey City in Hudson County, have been filmed for various scenes in the movie.

Some of the exterior scenes have been shot in Hoboken City, where restaurants such as Basile’s have been featured in the film. Within the city of Bayonne, places including Judicke’s Bakery, East 14th Street, 30 West 36th Street, and West 34th Street were also filmed.
