Mike Flanagan has just offered an update about The Exorcist adaptation that he has been meaning to work on. The filmmaker is currently gearing up for the release of The Life of Chuck, a slice-of-life sci-fi comedy film based on a Stephen King story. After this, he hopes to return to his roots in horror with a series adaptation of Carrie.

While that project is well on its way, The Exorcist adaptation might take a while to see the light of the day. The film was announced to be in the works at Blumhouse in 2024. However, since then, there have been no concrete updates about its progress.

For the same reason, a fan decided to ask Flanagan about the project. In a recent social media post, they asked for the current status. Flanagan replied,

"Production hasn't started, we need to finish CARRIE first. No way it's coming out next March. Nothing to worry about though."

Flanagan's remarks hint that his fans will have to wait longer to see his take on William Friedkin's classic 1973 film. He hasn't provided a specific production schedule window for the project, but it won't be anytime soon considering his commitment to the series remake of Carrie.

Mike Flanagan is one of the most popular horror directors in modern cinema and his work speaks for itself. He has worked on plenty of miniseries projects for Netflix and earned rave reviews for the most. Whether The Haunting of Hill House, The Fall of the House of Usher, or Midnight Mass, the fans have cherished every project he has worked on. Besides shows, he has proven his mettle in psychological horror-thriller films like Gerald's Game (2017), Doctor Sleep (2019), and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016).

Considering all this acclaim, the fans are bound to be excited for his thrilling work. That brings us to his plans to work on The Exorcist remake with Blumhouse. In May 2024, Deadline revealed that it is supposed to be a "Radically New Take" on the known classic and shared a logline from its press release. It reads,

"An all-new story set in The Exorcist universe and is not a sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer."

At the time, Flanagan shared a statement, sharing his appreciation for William Freidkin's iconic film.

“The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.”

Blumhouse is expected to produce this project with Intrepid Pictures and Flanagan's Red Room Pictures. At the time of the announcement, Jason Blum from Blumhouse shared his excitement about working with the visionary horror filmmaker:

“Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it"

The film was expected to be out in the world on March 13, 2026. However, Flanagan's latest response suggests that it will take longer to be out in the world. However, he assures the fans that there is "Nothing to worry about" this remake.
