Now I know why Dave Chappelle agreed to take up his role in A Star Is Born (& how Kanye West was behind it)

The Internet isn't really a shallow-shallow place, but it's the other way around. You keep looking for something to read about a topic, and you don't even know what you might come across. So I was reading about A Star is Born because why should Redditors have all the fun? I hadn't watched that beauty in months, by the way.

And while skimming, I came across this story by Complex (and then one by Vulture's as I looked for it more) about Dave Chappelle, who played Noodles, best friend of Bradley Cooper's Jack in the film. Turns out, it was Kanye West who became the connecting link between these two. The stand-up comedian talked about this during one Q&A session and revealed that West introduced him to Cooper.

But afterwards, it was Bradley Cooper who approached him for the role when the actor appeared at Chappelle's barn party. It all worked out, but the stand-up comedian told the audience that Cooper needed some hell of a convincing to pull him in, and then, a star was born. No, not really. Chappelle was already a star at the time.

Noodles's family is the definition of kindness in A Star is Born

An artist's life can take twists and turns at any given moment. They are free in any way you can imagine. If they want to sleep drunk on a road, they will. They won't ask for anyone's permission. They are rebellious, and that's why they are artists. But the problem is that our so-called society isn't really into artists' lives unless they wear good clothes and L'Air de Panache on them.

It was sort of the same with Jack in A Star is Born, but he had a best friend like Noodles. Chappelle had a small role in the film, but in this one moment where he pulls Cooper's drunk Jack from a grass bed on the side of a road, many of us will crave the support that radiates from the scene.

Then we see them chatting outside of Noodles's house, and there she comes for a moment, the lady of the house, Paulette (Drena De Niro). The way she asks a hungover Jack for a coffee is enough to melt any man's heart. There's a strong and caring woman in that voice at the same time.

All of this is happening after Jack and Ally (Lady Gaga) are going through a lovers' tiff.

The support of the family isn't just limited to providing a premise for them to stay. You see, this is where Jack and Ally casually get engaged, and it's Noodles who then arranges for their marriage on the same day.

I still think about whether Noodles's decision to get them married was right or not

Yes, it's good that Jack's best friend supported his marriage, but when I think about the final moments of the film before Jack hangs himself, it always gives my brain an itch. Was he right in doing what he did?

Ally's manager in A Star is Born, Rez (Rafi Gavron), confronts Jack, or rather convinces him that he is ruining her career. Maybe he was right. I mean, Jack had done things that push couples apart. But then this is a question of life and death; if that marriage didn't happen, he might be an alcoholic but alive, with Noodles supporting him.
