Stepping away from the candy-colored chaos of Barbie and getting into something dreamier, Margot Robbie is trading rollerblades for introspection in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Teaming up with Colin Farrell under the direction of Kogonada, Robbie dives headfirst into a story that’s part romance, part fantasy, and entirely soul-searching.
This is Robbie's first film after Greta Gerwig's Barbie which dominated the summer of 2023 and the actress took a break short after. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey seems to be quite the perfect choice after her hiatus, especially as the actress describes it as one of the most magical experiences of her life.
Talking to Vanity Fair, Robbie mentioned her long break and her experience getting back on set as she told the outlet:
"I think that’s the longest break I’ve ever had between jobs. I thought it would be more scary to be walking onto the Big Bold set on day one, but it wasn’t. Everything about this film was immediately comfortable. If audiences feel even a tiny slice of how magical it felt making this movie, then they’ll have the most incredible experience in the theater. Making this movie was truly one of the most magical experiences of my life.”
The actress then opened up about working with Farrell as she talked about how the two stars bonded on set to create the chemistry that is very evident in the film. She added:
“We spoke about everything; the script, life, films we love, people we know, experiences we’ve had and how they changed us. It really created a vibe that bled into the film once we started shooting.”
What is A Big Bold Beautiful Journey about?
The film follows Sarah and David, two strangers brought together at a wedding, who get swept into a surreal road trip through their own lives, led by a cryptic GPS that doesn’t just reroute them through cities, but through memories, regrets, and what-ifs. They have to sort through old wounds and forgotten dreams to figure out if love can really bloom when your heart’s been through the wringer.
Visually? Imagine dreamy pastel skies melting into a soft, nostalgic glow that sneaks up and hits you right in the feels. Kogonada doesn’t just direct. He paints with light and emotion, weaving magical realism and raw, gut-punching honesty into a world that’s equal parts fairy tale and heartbreak. He even draws inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki, which explains the film's aesthetic frames and how much it mirrors Miyazaki's worlds of fantasy.

The cast also includes Lily Rabe, Kevin Kline, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, while the soundtrack is by Joe Hisaishi who has worked with Miyazaki multiple times.
