One of Them Days sequel in development with these two stars reprising their roles

SZA and Keke Palmer are about to have One of Them Days again as their hit comedy film receives a sequel.

The 2025 comedy film brought these two stars together for a wild adventure as two women trying to avoid eviction. Writer and actress Issa Rae served as one of the producers, and Syreeta Singleton, Rae's frequent collaborator, wrote the script. Directed by Lawrence Lamont, the film was an R-rated mid-budget comedy affair. Still, it earned over $51.8 million globally and became a hit.

One of Them Days was also a critical success, earning a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. So, a few months into its release, TriStar Pictures is planning a follow-up project.

The project is in an early development stage at the studio, and it is expected to bring the creative team from the original project. The plot details have not been revealed yet. Regardless, it's a cause for celebration considering how long it took for the first film to go on floors.

One of Them Days shows Grammy-winning SZA making her acting debut in a feature film, which took a few years to enter the production stage. As per Variety, Syreeta Singleton wrote this script under the original title The Jungles, which was stuck in a development limbo since 2018. It took almost seven years to see the light of day and be released in theaters in early 2025.

During this time, Singleton worked as a writer on Issa Rae's Insecure and as a showrunner on Rap Shit!. Eventually, after a few drafts, Keke Palmer signed in to star as one of the leads, followed by SZA. The project marked Singleton and Rae's further collaboration with director Lawrence Lamont after Insecure and Rap Shit!. He made his feature directorial debut with this film.

After working in the television space for many years, Singleton entered the film sphere with One of Them Days. The film also serves as her love letter to the community she grew up in L.A. On recounting her experience about getting the film made, she told Variety recently:

"It was just like, so surreal. It was just like, ‘Wow, they really let us shoot a movie in the Jungles. That’s crazy.’ I never take it for granted when something that I’ve written becomes [a real project]."

She further added:

"My hope and prayer is, with a story like this and with the excitement around it, that it gets more studios excited to invest in these kinds of stories again. I do have more stories to tell, and I hope that it gets a little easier every time — in terms of the amount of time that it takes. I hope that we all begin to see the value and demand.”

In addition to SZA and Keke Palmer, the cast includes Lil Rel Howery, Gabrielle Dennis, Janelle James, Katt Williams, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, and Maude Apatow.
