Michael Ireland is confirmed to say goodbye as the film chief at Paramount, according to Deadline. He, alongside Daria Cercek, became Paramount's co-presidents of production in 2021 and was in charge of the films' development and release at the company while reporting directly to the studio's President and CEO, Brian Robbins, at that time.

The news comes as Paramount Global and Skydance Media are about to become one entity, a deal expected to close on August 7, 2025. The emerging entity will be called Paramount Skydance Corporation and will be valued at around $28 billion.

Throughout his time at the studio, Michael Ireland has worked on several titles, including but not limited to Top Gun: Maverick (2022), the Mission: Impossible movies, and more. Although Michael Ireland is stepping out of the position, he will reportedly remain as a consultant while the deal is being done. After that, he might attempt to negotiate a production deal with the studio.

While Michael Ireland served as the co-president of the Motion Picture Group alongside Daria Cercek, nine people served in the position before him. You can find the list of names below.

  • Ned Tanen (1984-1988)
  • Sid Ganis and Barry London (1988-1990)
  • David Kirkpatrick and Barry London (1990-1993)
  • John Lesher (1993-2009)
  • Adam Goodman (2009-2015)
  • Marc Evans (2015-2017)
  • Wyck Godfrey (2017-2020)
  • Emma Watts (2020 - 2021)

As you can see, John Lesher remains the longest-serving president of the studio's Motion Picture Group, remaining in the position for 16 years.

Why is the merger happening?

The merger is a result of Paramount Global's financial challenges and declining viewership on its cable networks. While the streaming landscape is blooming with giants like Netflix, Amazon, and more, this move seems a good way for the studio to get back in the game.

Both companies have had a discussion regarding this before, but the deal was never finalized due to unsatisfactory conversations, but then a preliminary agreement was reached last year.

Given that both companies co-own and have produced a range of franchises, this new entity will bring those into its house. This includes

  • Top Gun
  • Mission: Impossible
  • Transformers
  • Star Trek
  • SpongeBob SquarePants
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender

On top of that, Paramount is also expected to enter the video games market alongside Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media. However, this could be problematic, given the current condition of the unstable video game market.

There will be studios, including the Motion Picture Group for theatrical distribution, Television Studios for TV series production, Direct-to-Consumer for streaming, and TV Media for television channels.

The new company has already elected its board of directors, which includes

  • David Ellison
  • Barbera Bryne
  • Gerry Cardinale
  • Safra A. Catz
  • Andy Gordon
  • Justin G. Hamill
  • Sherry Lansing
  • Paul Marinelli
  • Jeff Shell
  • John L. Thornton

David Ellison and Jeff Shell will also serve as the company's Chairman and President, respectively.
