Filmmakers handling game adaptations have always been subject to scrutiny; however, it appears that Weapons director Zach Cregger already has the gaming community's approval for his Resident Evil adaptation. Much of this has to do with the fact that Weapons was a huge success with the audience, lending confidence to the director's abilities for the adaptation.
The fact that Cregger is himself a loyal player of the games, who wishes to write a "love letter" to the game instead of telling a story that has already been told in them, is just an added bonus for fans as more details about the upcoming film are being released.
According to the latest updates from Deadline, Paul Walter Hauser is the newest actor to join the cast of the Resident Evil film.
Here's everything we know about the latest casting.
Paul Walter Hauser joins Austin Abrams for Zach Creeger's Resident Evil adaptation

Even though Creeger has been talking about his Resident Evil adaptation for a while now, the exact plot and character details about the upcoming film are being kept under wraps. Apart from the fact that the Weapons star Austin Abrams is set to reunite with Zach Creeger, there were no more casting updates until today.
Paul Walter Hauser, who has an impressive filmography with projects such as Naked Gun, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Black Bird, I, Tonya, and Richard Jewell under his belt, is set to join Cregger on the Resident Evil adaptation, alongside Abrams. Details about Hauser's character in the movie have not been revealed as of now.
The Capcom game's latest adaptation is set to be a homage to the games, according to Creeger's comments:
"I love the games. I played all of the games. I played Resident Evil 4 a hundred times through. I’m obsessed with it. And so, I just want to tell a story that feels like it’s honoring the experience you get when you play the games. I haven’t seen the movies, that’s just not my thing. But the games are my thing. That’s just a playground I just love."
About the plot, not much has been revealed except for the fact that it will be telling the story of a whole new character set in the Resident Evil world, following the rules of the game, on a real-time journey from Point A to Point B, and this journey will take the character (possibly Abrams) to the absolute "depths of hell".
"This is not breaking the rules of the games. ... I am the biggest worshipper of the games, so I'm telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games. ... I'm not going to tell Leon's story, because Leon's story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that."
Creeger has described the film as unlike any of his previous work and a "wild ride." His love for the game and the previous work in the horror genre in films such as Barbarian and Weapons is going a long way in instilling excitement for the latest update among fans.
At the time of writing, the film has a scheduled release date of September 18, 2026, so we're exactly a year away from the film's premiere, counting the days down.
