The latest rom-com by Brett Haley, People We Meet on Vacation, which is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name written by Emily Henry, got a trailer recently.

Emily Bader and Tom Blyth are playing the leads as Poppy Wright and Alex Nilsen, respectively, who are best friends that go on vacations but things get complicated. Other than Emily and Tom, Jameela Jamil, Lukas Gage, Molly Shannon, and more are a part of the film's cast. The film's synopsis reads,

"Free-spirited Poppy and routine-loving Alex have been unlikely best friends for a decade, living in different cities but spending every summer vacation together. The careful balance of their friendship is put to the test when they begin to question what has been obvious to everyone else — could they actually be the perfect romantic match?"

Before this, Haley has directed films including I'll See You in My Dreams (2015), Hearts Beat Loud (2018), All the Bright Places (2020), and more. Yulin Kuang, who is known for creating series like Kissing in the Rain (2014) and I Ship It (2016-2019), has written the screenplay.

As of this writing, People We Meet on Vacation is scheduled for a release on January 9, 2026.

The film's trailer puts two people who appear exactly opposite of each other, Poppy and Alex, together. They are friends, but Poppy's parents treat Alex more like her boyfriend, which is clear when her mom tries to offer her a whole bunch of condoms for safety.

Both of them have made a pact that no matter where they are, they are going to be together every summer. This has been going on for a long time, as we see both of them in different cities, hanging out at different places, in the People We Meet on Vacation trailer.

One thing that becomes clear from the People We Meet on Vacation trailer is that Alex is the more mature of the two and is always there for Poppy. However, it remains unclear if Poppy has feelings for Alex. On the contrary, Alex clearly has feelings for her. In a scene where Poppy is kissing a guy, Alex watches them with heavy eyes.

But it seems like Poppy does know that Alex has feelings for her. In a scene where she is tucked in bed while talking to Alex, she says to him that he doesn't deserve her, implying that he deserves better.

Watching this scene in People We Meet on Vacation might take you back to a moment from The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) where Charlie (Logan Lerman) is talking to his teacher, Mr. Anderson (Paul Rudd).

Charlie asks Mr. Anderson that,

"Why do nice people choose the wrong people to date?"

To that, Mr. Anderson answers,

"Well, we accept the love we think we deserve."

That said, Alex seems to have chosen Poppy in this case. Though they aren't dating as far as we can tell after watching the trailer.

Do you think they'll end up together in the story? We would like to hear your thoughts on this in the comments.
