After a hiatus of five years, The Batman 2 is finally seeing good progress with exciting script updates from the creative team and a spring 2026 filming schedule so far. The highly anticipated Robert Pattinson superhero film is currently eyeing an October 2027 release, and even though the wait still seems long, the social media buzz keeps accumulating from all directions.

Moreover, the latest statement of Matt Reeves, while on an interview with Happy Sad Confused host Josh Horowitz, has a major villain tease from The Batman 2, and fans are already speculating. Reeves elaborated on how he, along with his creative team, worked on the script to land a new villain for the upcoming movie.

To quote his words:

"And I never wanted to lose Rob at the center of these stories and that is really what we set our aim on and so, picking the right villain that digs into what that does that sort of goes into his past and his life...that was what that drove that sort of discussion. "

The Emmy-nominated director further added:

"I will say...it's never really been done in a movie before."

Matt Reeves' recent red carpet statement to Josh Horowitz has already become the epicenter of all sorts of fan speculations on who will be The Batman 2 villain. It is evident that the antagonist is someone whom we have never met in a DC film before, and the kind of hard work, per Reeves, that went into creating this novel villain makes the plot look even more promising.

Reeves also mentioned that The Batman 2 will shift the limelight from "The Dark Knight" to the actual person Bruce Wayne. It is at this point that Matt Reeves further shared his journey of "who in the Rogues Gallery" will be the point of focus in the next movie.

According to Reeves' statement, he did "a deep dive" into the world of Batman comic books alongside his writing partner, Matson Tomlin, and both of them exchanged ideas about how they could give birth to a brand-new villain. The duo also watched several movies (not only the ones that belong to the "realm of Gotham"), and it was all aimed at:

"Push even further into the character of Bruce Wayne."

As mentioned by Matt Reeves, portraying new layers of Bruce Wayne in The Batman 2 and choosing a new villain were quite interconnected in the creative process. The award-winning filmmaker also made sure that the selected antagonist is able to dig back into the past of Bruce Wayne and what his life centers on, and that led to something that is totally new.

Moreover, Matt Reeves had to connect the events of the first movie's ending with how things unraveled in Colin Farrell's The Penguin to make sure that the story finds its continuity.
